One of the most significant ceremonial utensils in Jew-
ish life is used only once a year, on Rosh Hashonah. The
shofar Is based on the tradition from the times of our
forefather Abraham, When he was about to carry out
God's command to sacrifice his only son Isaac, his own
flesh and blood born to him in his old age, an angel at
the last moment prevented him from carrying out the
Divine command, and instead Abraham offered a ram as
a sacrifice in his son's stead.

The shofar has played an out-
standing part in Israel's history.
When the Jews were about to re-
ceive the Torah at Mount Sinai,
this took place to the sound of
the shofar. The approach of the
fiftieth year, also, in which all
slaves and the land and property
were restored to their freedom,
was heralded by the sound of
the shofar. When Israel embarked
upon a war, not of aggression,
but of glorification of the Holy
name, the clarion call of the sho-
far rallied God's fighters. In our
time, the only occasion for sound-
ing the shofar is, however, on

giveness of past sins, but also

pasages describing the solemnity
of the day, and the magnificence
of the Almighty, and after the
reading of the Torah, the congre-
gation is hushed because the sol-
emn moment for blowing the sho-
far has arrived.
And then the various kinds of
shofar sounds penetrate the in-
dividual's heart and soul. First
the tekiah, the long drawn-out
tune, even in its strength, then
the shevorim, the interrupted tune
comparable to the sobbing of a
child, and finally the teruah, the
broken, shattering sound like the
fear and anxiety in a person's

Rosh Hashonah.
It is worthwhile to scrutinize
the part the shofar plays on this ir
Holy Day. After the initial morn-
ing service which contains pray- Le Shono Tovo Tikosevu

becomes a shevorim.
Now the erstwhile child is a
grown-up, facing the trials and
tribulations of the daily life. The
struggle for daily bread, the daily
livelihood, worries and participa-
tion in the communal affairs, the
bringing up of his children, all
these shatter the formerly so
' quiet life, the tekiah has turned
into a teruah.
But when old ages comes, his
life struggle is over. Now he can

come back to the tekiah. His last
years are like his first, even and
undisturbed.
The history of the Jewish peo-
ple also can be compared to the
various tunes of the shofar. When
Israel had after forty years of

heart and mind. These three dif-
ferent shofar tunes can describe
the life of the individual and al-
so the life of the Jewish nation
very well.
When the child is born, it
grows up undisturbed by the
trials and hardships of the daily
life. Tranquility prevails, and no
cares or worries enter into the
child's mind. His life is even, a
drawn-out well being, an uninter-
rupted flow of quietness, very
easily comparable to the tekiah
of the shofar.
Then the child grows up fur-
ther into adolescence. His life is
still quiet and peaceful, but he
begins to realize that hardship
lies ahead. Little worries disturb
