What's in a Name
By

"What's in a name?" -1,
"Everything," replied a long-
ago favorite teacher of !Mice..
That was the first 'remark Mr.
!•ide during a term
of very delightful remarks. We
were then, the 34 children that
we were, in what has since bren
called, "a., creative "writing -class."
Names and numbers wen/ the
subjects of our first hour.
"Don't," said Mr. M. . . "don't
write that there were ten glasses
on the tray or five, but choose a
rarer and, therefore, more real
number, like seven, or nine!
"Don't," he continued, "make
the hero of your story 20 years
of age, but make him 22, or 23."
From there on, with a most
rearonable tolerance, he managed
to explain the value "of rarer
and therefore more real num-
bers." Numbers are valuable
from an aesthetic as well as
from an economic and supersti-
tious point -of view," he added :
"Names even more so."
"For example, what color of
hair has a RUTH?" "Black,"
echoed the class.
"What color hair has an
ALICE?" "Blond," echoed the
class.
"What physical proportions be-
long to a chap called BICK-
FORD?" "6 ft., 2 inches," some-
one cried. "Broad chest, broad
shoulders," cried another. "Ex-
cellent," cried Mr. M
At this point our notable

I know, rambling on with his
minor dissertation, concluded
that were mothers more prophe-
tic no fellow dubbed Oliver
would ever weigh 253 pounds.
But it is apparent that the
high priests of the ancient tem-
ple were even less wise and less
prophetic than most mothers. Had
they only known how much-dif-
ficulty their titles caused, -all the
world! Had they only known the
Cohens and the Levys in the
economic encirclement a Cohen
and a Levy would one day find
himself in!
Foreign Names a Barrier
the American democratic spirit,
so called. Would that it weren't,
but unfortunately it is.
Mrs. Roosevelt is a terribly
courageous creature. Realizing a
problem she imagines, and con-
sidering the nature of man she
may of course be imagining cor-
be brought about, where before
surface trickery harmony may
rectly that by subterfuge and
no harmony was.
The fact is a Jones and a Sha-
piro rarely sup together. But it
is giving in to cowardice to suit-
pose that were Shapiro called
Jones, then Jones and Jones
would ipso facto be bosom pals,
or at least cordial.
Men' Gullible
A pessimistic wit considering
Mrs. Roosevelt's ideas would say,
"Men, being the monkeys that
they tire, can change entirely if
you throw them adequate bait.
If you call perfume wine they'll
drink it. If you tell them day is
night they'll believe it. If you
call a Shapiro a Whitford they
will believe it." All this, men be-
ing the monkeys thit they are, is
probably true. Arid being true it
probably may be also good. If
goodness can be evolved from
silliness — fine! The algebra of
such evolution is confusing, but
it has been known to work.
When a woman like Mrs.
Roosevelt considers such a solu-
tion necessary, then it reveals
that she, too, has finally accepted
the sad fact of man's deep-root-
ed stupidity and prejudice. There

It was just such an idea that
prompted Mrs. Roosevelt to do
that recent article, in which sho
declared that foreign, names are
a barrier to the successful amal-

"often segregate people as much

them tied to their particular back-

which they come." All this is
