Fr iday, September 7, 1945 THE CITADEL OF THE ItSPIRIT OF JUDAISM (Continued from Page 8) would step down from the stage of history, and that the springs o f Torah and Jewish learning would then dry up. And so it • e about that the first im- Int cultural activitiy to be .rtaken in the period of set- ent ushered in by the Bal- four Declaration was the Insti- tute of Jewish Studies of the He- brew University, In December 1924, this Insti- tute was dedicated several months before the opening of the Univer- sity itself. It was entirely natural that, in the Hebrew University land in the Land of the Hebrews. the Institute dedicated to Jewish learning should have the prece- dence over all other institutes and during the first four years after the establishment of the University the Institute was its heart and center. Since 1929, when the Univer- sity established its Faculty of Humanities, the Institute of Jew- ish Studies has been an integral unit of the Faculty. None the less, the Institute enjoys a con- siderable degree of autonomy. It has its own Chairman, who is : . elected every year solely by the i t members of its staff. A special committee for the Institute is pre- sided over by Dr. J. H. Hertz, Chief Rabbi of the British Empire. WIDE CURRICULUM The Institute of Jewish Studies still retains its central place in the Faculty of Humanities. The scope of its curriculum is wider and the number of its profes- sors, lecturers and instructors larger than in any other institute of the Faculty. Two professors teach the Bible, three Talmud (there is also an instructor in t l'almud in the preparatory course), two professors and an instructor Hebrew literature, two professors, two lecturers and two instructors of Jewish history and the sociology of the Jews, two professors of Jewish philosophy and mysticism, one professor and one external teacher Hebrew lan- guage, and one instructor Pales- tinology. The fact that the Institute is. as mentioned above, an integral part of the Faculty of Humani- „l ties is very advantageous, because " under this arrangement the Jew- ish subjects are not stepa•ited from the general subjects. It is true that the Jew-subjects are a world in themselves and that in these subjects instruction and re- search are different than in others, Nevertheless, the general sub- jects serve as a common basis for the Jewish subjects and as a 4 DETROIT JEWISH CHRONICLE and The Legal Chronicle comprehensive theoretical fowl- ' dation. That the Faculty of Hu- manities has professors of Jew- ish philosophy and of general philosophy, professors and lec- turers in Jewish history and in the history of Greece and Rome, England and France, professors and lecturers in Hebrew literature and in English, French and Italian literature, professors of Talmud and of classical philology, is in itself a fact that is bound to make for reciprocal influence be- tween Jewish learning and gen- eral learning. Thus the Jewish subjects gain a wider horizon, and the general subjects are pervaded with the spirit of prophetic and later Judaism. In our days the Talmudic say- . ing, The 'torah returns to her Ilome" has been fulfilled. For, the Torah that went forth from Zion has now returned to Zion. In this `hought we may find some com- fort for the destruction of the great seats of Jewish learning in Europe. The saying of the nrophet, "And ye shall be com- forted in Jerusalem," has been fulfilled in our day. is D. Part of these will consist of repatriated Polish Jews returning from the Soviet Union. The Central Com- mittee of Polish Jews has pledged all possible assistance to these returning refugees and declares that the repatriated Polish Jews will receive the same assistance from the state as the others. Re- patriates have to appear before a commission of Russians and Poles to receive permission to re- turn. They are permitted to take Page Nine The S.S. Selahattin, chartered by the Joint Distribution Committee, and jammed to the full with its human cargo eagerly seeking safety, carried 543 refugees from Constanza bound for back with them a stipulated amount of goods amounting to two tons for those who have farming equipment or tools to bring back, and a smaller amount for industrial and office workers.
