the movement life and its prob-
lems. Many poems and articles
for the wall newspaper were writ-
ten by her. In her own uiet way
she carried out anything she had
been charged with. Iler comrades
knew she could always be relied
upon. Lilka's life was not an easy
one. She encountered opposition
at home to her adherence to the
, movement and at school pressure
was brought to bear upon her to
give up that work. Nevertheless,
she was never hard to complain,
and if any person tried to shake
her from her movement allegiance
the little girl would say, "Nobody
has any right to interfere with
anything I do in connection with
Palestine."
She was both serious and po-
litically very active, and her no-
bility of soul endeared her to
all her comrades. She was also
possessed of great personal
courage. On one occasion 40
boys and girls were marching to
Warsaw carrying their banner.
On the way, at the Krebedzia
Polish hooligans attacked the
group and beat up many of the
children, taking away the ban-
ner. In spite of the beating,
Lilka remained behind alone, re-
fusing to give way, and wrested
the banner back from the hooli-
gan youths, then quickly run-
ning across the bridge. She did
not complain of the blows she
had sustained so *as not to worry
her friends, but the following
day she had to stay in bed and
that was the first time she failed
to attend the nightly meeting of
the group.
She served as an example to
other girls in every kind of
work: Distributing the party pa-
per, "Das Neie Wort"; raising
money for the National Fund."
at rallies; in the chorus, etc. In
1936 after she had attended a
summer camp she was elected a
member of the branch commit-
tee. Her very first proposal was
that "any member being late for
meetings should be fined and the
money was to go to the Keren
Kayemeth." She herself col-
lected the money. Her second
proposal was that "members who
themselves attended school should
each others, namely working
members in the evening," and
she herself set the example. She
carried on a correspondence
with her comrades who had gone
to Palestine and was most eager
to go there too. She wished to
complete her training at some
agriculural training school in
Palestine—but it was not to be!
At the outbreak of war she
remained in Warsaw and was ac-
tive in the underground move-
ment. She became a member of
the "Dror"—Fighting group and
undertook the most dangerous
task of all, that of liaison be-
tween Headquarters and the dif-
ferent units, in the execution of
which task she gave up her life.
Her brother, Naphthali, a
member of the same Fighting-
Unit, is also one of those who
fell fighting in the Warsaw
Ghetto.
