Detroit Chapter of Hadassah
plans an active year, in line with
national Hadassah's program of
rehabilitating J e w i s h refugees
who have come to Palestine brok-
en in health from persecution.
Hadassah's aim is to help these
people to recover their health and
to protect and heighten health
standards already existing in Pal-
estine.
To accomplish • this, National
Hadassah has set a goal of $1,-
100,030 for postwar health work,
required for the continuation and
expansion of services of the Ha-
dassah Medical Center, which was
erected on Mt. Scopus in 1939;
for the building of a new 200-
bed tuberculosis hospital; for in-
creasing its activities in the field
of public health, district medical
nursing, home, institutional and
convalescent care, infant welfare,
school hygiene, epidemic control
and the shipment of medical sup-
plies and equipment, and for co-
operation with other organiza-
tions doing medical work in Pal-
estine.
Mrs. Louis Glasier, president of
the Detroit Chapter, announces
that Hadassah has been appoint-
ed the "health arm" of the im-
migration department of the
Jewish Agency for Palestine (the
official body with which the Bri-
tish government deals on all Pal-
estine matters.) As such, its doc-
tors and nurses will meet, exam-
ine and help route through to
the proper institutions all refu-
gees requiring medical attention
in the Holy Land from now on.
Palestine has taken in the larg-
est number of Jewish refugees
of any country in the world, and
has done this regardless of their
condition upon arrival. Through
Hadassah institutions, strength-
ened by the Jewish community,
these people are helped to re-
cover from the sickness of body
and mind resulting from their
experiences.
Mrs. Judith Epstein, presi-
dent of National Hadassah, and
Mrs. Rose Halprin, former presi-
dent, attended the recent World
Zionist Conference in London.
This and other matters of vital
importance will be discussed at
the forthcoming joint board meet-
ing of all four Detroit Hadassah
groups on Tuesday, Sept. 18.

The Year, 5706, Promises to Be
A Good Year, Says Rabbi Fischer

The year 5706 announces it-
, self at its very entrance as a
"sweet and good year." It ar-
rives to us at the momentous
occasion when America at . 1 the
Allied Nations rejoice in the two
greatest and priceless gifts which
they received from our Heavenly
Father: namely, VICTORY and
PEACE. Differing front the pre-
vious war years, this Rosh Ha-
shonah does not come to us ac-
companied with the thunder of
cannons, with a glowing sky re-
flecting the fire of great guns.
This all-pervading joy and
sense of happiness, the New Year
imprints not alone upon our na-
tional and international relations,
but also, and in richest measure,
upon our homes. Our homes —
in overwhelming numbers—were
never more bright, more joyous,
more suffused with light than at
this Rosh Hashonah.

OUR PRAYERS GRANTED

The fervent and devout prayers
we offered the last High Holidays
—nay, during the whole space of
the war years — were listened
to and granted by the Lord!
Indeed, the tears, the sweat,
toil, blood and agony of the past
years were turned in the Alchemy
of the Lord to precious blessings
at the conclusion of the old and
the beginning of this new year.
While I prayerfully extend my
most sincere wish for a "happy
new year" to Detroit Jewry, I
beg to appeal at the same time
most emphatically that we be not
satisfied to sit down at the table
of life on these Holy Days and
enjoy exclusively with our fam-
ilies the rich gifts and blessings.
We must feel it as our sacred

Urge Registration
For Wayne U

Jewish students of Wayne Uni-
versity are urged to register for
the course in Hebrew which will

include Hebrew in their course
of study wherever possible.
This course, Elementary He-
brew, is the first Hebrew course
to be offered by Wayne Univer-
sity in response to the suggestion
of a committee of Jewish edu-
cators, acting through the Jew-
ish Community Council. It is in-
tended that additional advanced
courses will be offered in suc-
ceeding semesters, as registra-
tion warrants.
Full-time students will receive
credit towards graduation. Non-
matriculated students will also
be admitted. The course is
scheduled for T u e s d ay and
Thursday evenings, 7 to 9.
Louis Panush has been ap-
pointed instructor. Mr. Panush

School. He is editor of the Met-
ropolitan Detroit Science Re-
view and has taught in the

AID OUR DESTITUTE

It is true that the horrors of
war are officially over for them
also, but pogroms — even if it be
in a minor form, against their

against their effort to eke out an 1

ing on and are continued most
ruthlessly. The war is over for

them, but its fearful legacy: le.
gions of orphans, widows, maim.
ed and crippled are yet with them
walking around with faltering,
breaking steps in the great cities

and in the haunted villages! The
only sin of these unfortunates is
that they are of the blood of
Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, and—
if not for God's graces — we
would be in their place!
