Ind en (rd s is Ian ran It went on and on. It seemed an almost impossible task. But before the evening was over, it was agreed unanimously by all those present that "business would not be clone as usual." What some had thought impos- sible at the beginning began to see the light of actual realiza- tion. The new organization took form. A committee was se- lected by this larger group; au- thorized to analyze the problem ; to establish the mechanics for a permanent form of organization ; to draft a code of ethics and to arrange for its implementation ; and to do whatever else was nec- essary to establish South Slate Street as a desirable shopping and entertainment district for all of Chicago. Gus Rosenthal, a pawn broker, was chosen to head the commit- tee and has buided it to this day as president. Day after day, for week s, Gus canvassed the "street," getting the boys into line, presenting the program to them, and after several months, he proudly submitted the fact that all of the men he had con- tacted to become members, none had refused. But the best was yet to come. The new organization took the name of the South State Street Merchants Association. At the first general meeting, Rosenthal said: "The old days are over. To- day the merchant who expects to stay in business must give the public full value for its money. One price, honest labels, re- funds upon request are the rules of modern trade." In these few sentences, Gus abbreviated the Association's fourteen-point Code of Ethics. Some of the declara- tions follow: "It is considered unethical practice to entice or persuade reopleeto entairltioge.who have only stopped to Took at the window displays.
