Jewish Publication Society
Announces Seven Outstanding
New Books for 1945

(Philadelphia, Pa.) — Mr. J.
Solis-Cohen, Jr., president of
The Jewish Publication Society
of America, has just announced
the Society's program for the
year 1945. The list consists of
the following seven books.

The scene of this interesting with an illuminating essay, and
story is laid in Eastern Europe every significant passage with a
and Vienna during the period
between the two World Wars. It
tells of a Jewish country lad
who, while studying in the bril-
liant capital of Austria before
1914, was unable to resist the
glitter and promise of the world.
He abandoned the faith of his
fathers, to the consternation of
his family who thereupon dis-
owned him. His son, however,
searching more profoundly for
truth and happiness, sees in the
Jewish piety abandoned by his
father the answer to his own
and the world's spiritual needs.
It is a charming tale and reveals
a type of Jewish life which the
American Jewish public does not
sufficiently know. Its humor and
pathos, its character delineation
and entertaining dialogue made
the book a "best seller" when it
first appeared in German in
1935. 350 pages $3.00.

THE ALEPH-BET STORY
BOOK
By Deborah Pessin

This highly entertaining juve-
nile is certain to be popular in
every Jewish home where six
and seven-year-olds claim atten-
tion. Miss Pessin is well known
for her previous work in this
field. In this delightful book,
she has drawn upon Jewish leg-
end and history, as well as upon
her own imagination, to take
each letter of the Hebrew al-
phabet through hilarious and ex-
citing adventures. The book is
amply and vividly illustrated.

THE NIGHTINGALE'S SONG
By Dorothy Alofsin

The well-known Jewish histo-
rian, Cecil Roth, presents in this
book a full account of Jewish
life and achievement in the whole
Italian peninsula. Jews have
had a continuous history in Italy
since before the beginning of the
Christian Era. Under the Ro-
man Republic, during the reigns
of Emperors, Popes, Dukes and
Kings, Jews experienced happy
and tragic days, which compose
an unbroken chain of dramatic
events. Jewish cooperation in the
development of Western civiliza-
tion and Italian Jewish contribu-
tions to Jewish culture are es-
sential parts of the story. Dr.
Roth's style and his choice of il-
lustrative material make this a
most readable volume. Illus-
trated. Maps. 60(I pages. $3.00
