the Netherlands. This week it
agreeable to note that the first
nest conductor of the Amster-

ow purged of Mengelberg and
ther collaborationist personnel,

will be Albert van Raalte who,
according to Dutch circles here,
was dropped during the occupa-

Albert Cohen
New Vocational
Service Chief

Harvey H. Goldman, president
of the board of directors of the
Jewish Vocational Service, has
announced the appointment of Al-
bert Cohen as executive director
of the agency.
Mr. Cohen has been a member
of the staff of the Jewish Voca-
tional Service since 1942. As the
Agency's first group worker, he
became well known to the com-
munity. In addition to his group
activities, he has had extensive
experience in individual counsel-
ing, and has served as the agen-
cy's liaison worker with the Jew-
ish Social Service Bureau, Jewish
Community Center, and North
End Clinic, and as its counselor
for veterans.
Since 1944, Mr. Cohen has also
been in charge of the Michigan
Group Vocational Guidance Pro-
gram of the Bnai Brith, which
functions outside of metropolitan
Detroit on a week-end basis. In
this capacity, he organized and
developed vocational guidance ac-
tivities for youth and adult
groups in out-state Michigan ci-
ties, and at the Hillel Founda-
tions of the University of Mich-
igan and Michigan State College.
Because of the scope of his new
duties as Executive Director of
the Jewish Vocational Service,
Mr. Cohen has resigned from the
o u t-s t a t e vocational guidance
work.
Mr. Cohen received both Ba-
chelor's and Master's degrees
from the University of Pennsyl-
vania. He has been on the staff
of the Allied Jewish Appeal in
Philadelphia, where he served as
a campaign secretary until he
joined the staff of the Jewish
Vocational Service of Detroit. He
is author of a number of publi-
cations on vocational guidance,
and has been guest lecturer at
Wayne University.

Nazi Europe to Shanghai. Two of
the J.D.C. representatives in
Shanghai, Miss Laura Margolies
and Manuel Siegel, were interned
by the Japanese authorities with
all other Americans in February.
1992, Miss Margolies was later
repatriated to the United States
on a Swedish exchange ship. Mr.
Siegel is still interned.
Despite heroic efforts to feed
the needy Jewish internees in the
Shanghai camp, there were only
sufficient funds to provide one
meal a day for 5,000 people. This
money was borrowed locally on
the promise that it would be re-
paid at the end of the war by the
Joint Distribution Committee. The
Shanghai Jewish Relief Associa-
tion, composed mostly of Russian
Jews, has imposed a voluntary
tax upon the local Jewish popu-
lation and the Jewish Relief Coin-
mittee in Tienstin also participat-
ed in raising funds to feed the
interned Jewish refugees.
