The honor which liberated coun-
tries are now bestowing upon
their heroes of the arts, and the
dishonor they are visiting upon dis-
graced collaborators, also in the
arts, is shown in news reaching
Washington from Norway and
Holland.
Norway's patriot poet, Arnulf
Overland, returned from a Ger-
man concentration camp to find
that the Norwegian Government
had invited him to occupy a beau-
tiful new home in Oslo, "The
Ghetto."
In Holland, William Mengel-
berg, conductor of the famous
Amsterdam "'Concertgebouw Or-
chestra," and wel-known for his
work with the New York Phil-
harmonic and other American or-
chestra," and well-known for his
from lifting a baton in the Neth-
erlands, because of his warm es-
pousal of the Nazis, even before
they occupied his homeland. It was
Dutch musicians, banded into the

"Council or Honor for Music"
which castigated Mengelberg as
a traitor who acted so "contrary
to national honor" as to prohibit
his ever conducting again in his
homeland.

In Washington, the Hebraic
section of the Library of Congress
has recently been moved from the
stately old main building to mod-
ern quarters in the Annex, and is
expected soon to receive expanded
space for comfortable housing of
its rich collection. A near neighbr
on the same floor is the Thomas
Jefferson Room. It pays honor to
the great exponent of tolerance,
whose library formed the nucleus
for the Library of Congress.

as in the previous years.

an example of a decorous and

tended services at Joy Road last
year during High Holy Days site

Jewish Vets Open
Washington Office,
Madison Reports

Harry Madison, Michigan State
Department Commander of the
Jewish War Veterans has return-
ed from New York City where
he attended a meeting of the Na-
tional Executive Committee of
the Jewish War Veterans.
National offices of the JWV
have been opened in Washington,
D. C., with an executive secre-
tary in charge. This for the first
time gives the Jewish Veterans
representation direct in Washing-
ton with a spokesman constantly
in attendance looking after their
interests.
The national executive com-
mittee appealed to the govern-
ment not to deport the internees
at the Fort Oswego, N. Y., Ref-
ugee Shelter to their homelands.
The JWB asked that they be giv-
en the status of illegal entrance
into the United States and that
they be kept here until such time
as the entire problem of reloca-
tion of refugees be decided by
the United Nations.
The JWV Executive Committees
also urged that Congress grant
hospitalized veterans the franking
privilege so that they would not
have to pay for mail.
