Dr. Weitzmann, referring to
the new British Labor Govern-

he said, "there should be a ma-
jor political decision with re-
gard to Palestine primarily by
the British Government, but
supported also by the two great
allies."
"The decision should provide
for the setting aside of Pales-
tine as a country where the
newish people should be free to
work out their own salvation
and achieve statehood."

At the same time he emphasiz-
ed that the additional task of the
conference is to stabilize the in-
ternal life of the Zionist move-
ment.
Pointing out that there was no
ground to fear that Soviet Russia
would oppose a favorable decision
on Palestine by Britain, one hav-
ing the endorsement of the Unit-
ed States, he recalled that Win-
ston Churchill had made one of
the strongest attacks on the
White Paper when it was sub-
mitted to the House of Commons
in 1939, and that Herbert Mor-
rison, now Lord President of the
Council, had declared at that time
that the White Paper was not to
be considered as being binding on
subsequent British governments if
conditions changed.
At the same time Shertok dis-
closed that the absence from the
conference of delegates from
Eastern European countries was
due to exit difficulties. Britain,
he added, had granted entry visas
to delegates from all countries.

E. Europe Rabbis
To Hold Parley

BUCHAREST (WNS) — The
first organized step toward the
religious rehabilitation of the
Jewish survivors in Eastern Eu-
rope was taken here this week
when it was disclosed by the of-
ice of the Chief Rabbinate that a
conference of the surviving rabbis
of Poland, Romania, Hungary,
and Czechoslovakia is to be held
in Bucharest on Aug. 26.
The gathering will discuss gen-
eral Jewish religious and educa-
tion problems, and is expected to
culminate in action looking to the
revival of religious education
among the Jewish survivors gen-
erally, and the youth in particu-
lar.

good dwellings, the good food and
good attire from the Germans and

said the World Conference of
Polish Jews will press on the
United Nations the opening of
Palestine to dispersed and home-
les Jews in Europe.
Dr. Tenenbaum said his organi-
zation endorses the program of
the Zionist Conference in London
to "secure the Jewish Common-
wealth in Palestine as an imme-
diate necessity." He praised the
reconstituted Warsaw regime.
Turning to the scheduled meet-
ing of UNRRA in London in the
next few weeks, the leader of
3,000,000 Jews of Polish descent,
said that it must take up the prob-
lem of granting the Jewish peo-
ple "equal representation on the
council and the committees of this
all-important Relief Organiza-
tion." He claimed that UNRRA's
breakdown was due to "its rigid
structure" which permits the indi-
vidual state to be "the pivot and
arbiter of all relief activities in-
cluding its distribution." He de-
manded a nation's status for
Jews.
The World Federation of Polish
Jews is campaigning at present
for $5,000,000 to relieve and re-
habilitate distressed Polish Jews,

AMG Handling
Of Refugees Scored
By Dr. Goldstein

LONDON (WNS)—Dr. Israel
Goldstein, of New York, president
of the Zionist Organization of
America, who has just finished a
tour of the American-occupied
zone of Germany, declared here
that he was not impressed with
the military government was
handling displaced persons still
in camps in Germany.
"I have yet to see any very
convincing signs that they are
attacking the probelm with the
energy, intelligence or sympa-
thetic understanding which Amer-
ican officials do possess when they
put their minds to it," he said.
Dr. Goldstein, said the military
government appeared to be an-
xious to get rid of the problem of
the displaced persons. "For in-
stance," he said, "there has been
no organized useful work for the
displaced persons to keep them
busy in camp."
Dr. Goldstein estimated that
there are 100,000 Jews in Eur-
ope who would be ready and will-
ing to leave for Palestine tomor-
row, and that 1,000,000 want to
migrate there eventually.
