Praying in the Pacific
is SUBSIDIZED by the Detroit Jewish
Welfare Federation?
Our Jewish chaplains with the Army
in the Pacific are reported to be very
proud of a Jewish chapel which has been
built at a Marine base in the forward
part of the fighting in the Pacific. The
chapel there has been built especially
for Jewish soldiers, not following the
usual patterns of such chapels which may
be interchangeably used for all faiths.
One of the reasons for this is undoubt-
edly the large number of Jewish service-
men in the Pacific area.
We agree with the editor of the Jew-
ish Post of Indianapolis who says:
It is true that the Jews as a race have
not undergone anything like the atroci-
ties and suffering at the hands of the Japs
that they have experienced at the hands
of the Germans— and yet the Germans
and Japanese ideologies are at bottom the
same, the principle of force, the principle
of might as against the Judeo-Christian
idea of right.
It was the Judaic genius which first
proclaimed the principle of right as
against might — and from it Christianity
derived this idea. The war on the Japan-
ese front as on the German front re-
volved all about this principle.
The world cannot have any enduring
peace until the principle of right is so es-
tablished, that no nation will dare in the
future, rise to challenge it.
Shall We Be Kept?
Some time ago, the Association of
English-Jewish newspapers issued a pro-
nunciamento intended to establish a pol-
icy of conduct for the Anglo-Jewish press
of the country that would "raise the
standard" of these publications.
With this broad over-all view, we
have no objection. The Anglo-Jewish
press, with a few notable exceptions, is
far below the standards of journalistic
excellence.
We object, however, to the insinua-
tion by the officials of the Association of
English-Jewish Newspapers that national
Jewish organizations provide funds for
the work of the Anglo-Jewish press. It is
an open invitation to "be kept." And it
is just as dishonorable for an Ango-Jew-
ish newspaper to be "subsidized" by a
national Jewish organization, no matte:
how altruistic its motives, as to be "sub-
sidized" by a commercial organization.
The Anglo-Jewish press has little
enough opportunity for an independent
attitude, without deliberately hanging a
chain around its neck. There is too much
field for honest disagreement in all
phases of Jewish life for a newspaper of
general Jewish circulation to hamper it-
self by accepting financial support from
any Jewish organization.
An Anglo-Jewish weekly should be
the voice of the community, not neces-
sarily the voice of the Jewish Community
Council, the Federation, the Zionist Or-
ganization or the Congregation Bnai
Something or other, but a cross section
of the entire Jewish Community.
Can there be some connection in the
broadcasting of that idea by the Associa-
tion with the fact that its president is the
editor of the Detroit Jewish News, which
"Although over a year old, the As-
sociation has nothing to its credit, even
its own members admit, and if this tie-up
is the first major 'accomplishment' of the
Association, then the Association will be
digging its own grave almost before it is
out of its swaddling clothes."
The World Zionist Conference
The meeting of the world Zionist con-
ference in London is the first of such
world gatherings since the war began. It
is indicated that the conference will en-
large the world Zionist Executive, adding
Dr. Silver among others to the body which
has direction of the world activities of
the movement.
There can be no question but that now
American Jewry must assume, next to
Palestine itself, the paramount position
in the Zionist movement—and it will re-
quire all the strength American Zionists
can muster to meet the problems facing
the movement.
Let there be no illusions about it. The
present situation facing the Zionists is a
very difficult one. England's attitude on
dissolving the Jerusalem municipal coun-
cil, when the A1'ab members left, al-
though Jerusalem has a predominantly
Jewish population, shows us perhaps as
good as anything where she stands. She
respects the Arabs. When the Arabs left,
the council was dissolved. Some month
ago, the Jewish members left. Then the
Council was not dissolved.
Far graver than this of course is the
White Paper situation. The end of the cer-
tificate pile has been reached, and by the
White Paper the door now is to be firmly
closed against all Jewish immigration.
It is up to the Zionist conference in
London to devise steps to meet the criti-
cal situation and it will probably be up to
American Jewry to bring the force to
bear to enable their demands to stand up.
Laymen and Learning
Learning used to be an integral part
of living as a Jew. Our grandfathers
would have thought it unusual to begin a
day without studying a part of the Tal-
mud or at least the Mishnah.
Considering the problems that now
confront the Jew in America, it is time
that we recaptured this healthy Jewish
attitude toward learning. Therefore, the
National Laymen's Institute, conducted
under the auspices of the National Fede-
ration of Jewish Men's Clubs and the Na-
tional Academy of Adult Jewish Studies,
is to be congratulated on its recent pro-
gram of study for Jewish men of affairs'
at the Jewish Theological Seminary in
New York. These laymen, many of them
ve ry prominent in their fields, and busier
than most of us, set aside a whole week
to study with some of our most distin-
guished scholars a few of the great texts
in Jewish literature, and with some of
our most active Jewish leaders, the press-
, ing Jewish problems of our time.
