NEW YORK — Prior to
his departure by plane last
Friday to attend the World
Zionist Conference in Lon-
don, Dr. Abba Hillel Silver,
joint chairman of the Amer-
i c a n Zionist Emergency
Council and chairman of its
Executive Committee, issued
a statement declaring that
"it should be clear to all
that the Jewish people in-
side and outside of Pales-
tine is determined to fight
for the Jewish State until it
is achieved." '
The American Zionist Emer-
gency Council, which speaks for
all major Zionist bodies in the
United States, will be repre-
sented by three delegates at the
World Zionist Conference, the
first gathering of its kind since
the war. The three representa-
tives are Dr. Silver, Dr. Stephen
S. Wise, joint chairman of the
Council, and Emanuel Neumann,
member of the Executive Com-
mittee.
Dr. Silver's statement follows:
"I am leaving for London in
the hope that the first World
Zionist Conference since the war
may define the- fixed course which

DETROIT JEWISH COMMUNITY?
This is what you would get if the Detroit Jewish Wel-
fare had its way. For the Jewish Federation by using
charity funds to "subsidize" a new Anglo-Jewish publi-
cation has sought and is seeking to control not only the
communal purse but also public opinion. In Nazi Germany
and in Italy the press was also "subsidized" with public
funds.
In its "apology" for using public funds to finance a
private enterprise the Federation makes the following
statement:
"Because of this unique relationship the Jewish Wel-
fare Federation exercises . . . direction of the operation
of both the EDITORIAL and business practices of the
Jewish News."
The Federation says further: "Federation is justified
in providing . . . financial support to the Jewish News
because: by making available such financial support,
Federation lends stability to the Jewish News which RE
FLECTS ITSELF (the Federation) in editorial and busi-
ness policy."
In Germany the Nazis also subsidized the press
so that it would reflect only the government's views.
Thus the Jewish News is a creature of the Federation,
or rather of a few of its leaders.
is hailed by the American Zionist Emergency Council,
which represents the majority of American Zionists. New
hope for a Jewish Commonwealth and for the lifting of
restrictions on immigration into Palestine is seen by the
ZOA, whose leaders are now attending the Zionist world
convention which opened in London Wednesday.

Petain Sought to
Eliminate All Jews
PARIS (WNS) —Marshal Hen
ri Petain, who is now being tried
on the charge of being a traitor
to France, attempted, while dic-
tator of France, to obtain a list
of all Jewish members of the
Senate and Chamber of Depu-
ties, so that action might be tak-
en against them.
This was the testimony at the
trial by Jules Jeannency, a mem-
ber of the Provisional govern-
ment, who told the court that Pe-
tain had requested •that he sub-
mit a list of all Jewish Sena-
tors. Senator Edward Herriot,
who is now mayor of Lyon, and
who was then President of the
Chamber of Deputies, testified
that the senile marshal had re-
quested a similar list of Jewish
deputies from him.
Earlier in the testimony, it was
