The Fisher Body Division of
General Motors has purchased
596,000,000 pounds of steel,
enough to fill a string of freight
cars more than 53 miles long, for
war production purposes since
1942, a survey showed.
It would take 110 freight trains
with a normal load of 60 cars
each to haul the steel, half of
which was armor plate used by.
Fisher Body for manufacture' of
medium and heavy tanks.
In addition, Fisher Body pur-
chased no o r e than 48,000,000
pounds of aluminum for aircraft
production. The steel and alumin-

production does not include ma-

Jews Boycott
Jerusalem Inquiry

NEW YORK (WNS) — More
than one hundred prominent ci-
tizens, including Albert Einstein,
Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt and Her-
bert H. Lehman, have petitioned
the President a a d government
departments concerned, to free
the 968 refugee's from the gov-
ernment shelter at Fort Ontario.

JERUSALEM (Palcor)—Three
leading Jewish institutions—Vaal
Leumi, Jewish Palestine's Nation-
al Council; Agudath Israel, ex-
treme orthodox religious organi-
zation, and the Jewish Commun-
ity Council of Jerusalem, announc-
ed their decision to boycott the
Municipal Commis ion appointed
by the Government to supersede
Jerusalem's M un lei pal Council,
and the one-man commission ap-
pointed to inquire into the ad-
ministration of the city.
A letter stating the reasons for
the boycott was addressed jointly
by the three organizations to J.
V.W. Shaw, officer administering
the Palestine Government, and
protested at the "grave wrong
done to the Jewish public"
through "the arbitrary govern-
ment decision to deprive the Jews
of Jerusalem of their right to
participate, through their elected
representatives, in the atlin'nis-
tration of the city."

Declaring that "while Ameri-
cans are fighting to establish
freedom and human dignity
throughout the world, it is scarce-
ly to be tolerated that anti-Nazi
refugees should be confined
against their will at Fort Onta-
rio," the group, acting as the
Sponsors' Committee of t h e
Friends of Fort Ontario Guest-
Refugees, recommended that the
government should:

1. Give the refugees at Fort
Ontario their immediate freedom
to live and work wherever they
choose in the United States; and
regularize, as quickly as possi-
ble, the status of those who 110r-
malty would have been eligible
for immigration; 2. Facilitate the
repatriation, or emigration to
other countries, of those who de-
sire it; and 3. Declare it to bt
the policy of the United States
that no law-abiding political or
religious refugee should be re-
patriated or sent to another
country against his will.

No Unemployment
In Palestine

1ERU SALEM ( Palcor) — One
of the favorable aspects of the
Palestine economic situation is the
fact that although employment on
military projects has decreased 50
percent since 1942, displacing tens
of thousands of persons, this has
not brought about any consider-
able unemployment. Robert Scott,
Acting Chief Secretary of the
Palestine Government, pointed
out.
Apparently alluding to the ac-
tivities of the Palestine Arab
Trade Delegation in London, Scott
deprecated "attempts to split Pal-
estine trading interests into two
mutually exclusive sections."
Ile said that there was little
hope for the early reduction of
high taxation, which was neces-
sary in order to combat inflation.
In view of the needs of liberated
Europe, continued shortages must
be expected in the future in food
and textiles, and the control of
exports, imports and internal dis-
tribution must continue, though
with some relaxation.
