lUndernocratic Tieup May Prove
Rabble-Rousing Ex-Senator Reynolds
1 1 Hails Scouting I
'Danger to Detroit Jewry
And His Nationalist Party

National Commander, Jewish War Veterans of U. S.

The hot spotlight of publicity
is now beating down upon the ac-
tivities of ex-Senator Robert R.
Reynolds and his so-called Amer-
ican Nationalist party and its re-
lated American Nationalist Com-
mittee. The Cleveland Press, in
an exclusive series of articles,
has revealed that one of Rey-
nolds' aides is none • other than
Joe McWilliams, of Yorkville,
who was indicted by the govern-
ment for sedition.
The well-documented newspa-
per expose has done a good ser-
vice to Cleveland. It rid the city
of Joe McWilliams, alias Jack
Williams, and other solicitors for
the Nationalist Party. This is a
most encouraging manifestation
of the basic decency of the Unit-
ed States.
It is well to review the orig-
ins and history of the American
Nationalist Party. The brainchild
of Senator Reynolds, its pro-
posed party program calls for or-
ganization "on the unit basis."
It is the ex-Senator's dream that
"in every community of the
United States there will be or-
ganized units consisting of 10
people only.
This number is restricted to
10 for the reason that in a unit
of 10 members only, every mem-
ber of that unit will be personal-
ly acquainted with his fellow
unit members." Thus, by its own
definition, the Reynolds party
would organize along the lines of
the early organization of the
Nazi party in Germany.
The organizer, Senator Rey-
nolds, is the same man who on
the floor of the U. S. Senate
voted against repealing the arms
embargo, against "lend-lease,"
against repeal of the Neutrality
law, and against the extension of
the draft law. He is the same
Senator Reynolds who, in 1938
after returning from Europe
said, "The dictators are doing
what is best for their people.
Hitler and Mussolini have a date
with destiny; it is foolish to op-
pose them, so why not play ball
with them?"
It is the same Senator Rey-
nolds who, speaking on April 13,
1939, in New York City, made
a speech at which one of the
honored guests — the then Nazi
Bond leader, Fritz Kuhn — said,
"I like the speech very well."

Net Settlement
For Vets in Zion

JERUSALEM (Palcor)—A new
settlement for demobilized Jewish
soldiers was established near Ge-
nossar, on the Eastern shores of
Lake Kinnereth, on 4,200 dunams
of Keren Kayemeth (Jewish Na-
tional Fund) land. A pioneer
group has already begun setting
up foundations for buildings for
released soldiers who will settle
there.

Interviewed in Europe by Hit-
ler's own newspaper, the Vol-
kischer Beobachter, Reynolds is
quoted as saying: "What busi-
ness is it of ours, of the Ameri-
can people, what form of gov-
ernment Germany, Italy, Japan
or any other country has? Did
the German people really do any-
thing to the American people
that we should hate them for it?
Why should we stick our noses
into the affairs of other na-
tions?"
Besides his association with Joe
McWilliams, Reynolds is a friend
and collaborator of Gerald L. K.
Smith, Gerald Winrod, now un-
der indictment for sedition, and
C. Sylvester Viereck, convicted
Nazi agent, to name just a few
of that ilk. A supporter of Ger-
ald Smith's violent campaign of
obstructionism in San Francisco
against the organization of a
charter for the United Nations,
Reynolds sent a telegram on
May 15th to Rev. Jonathan Per-
kins of San Francisco which said
in part: "You are fortunate in
having the Honorable Gerald L.
K. Smith in San Francisco at
this vital crossroad in history."
In all, there are about 20
known solicitors now trying to
raise money on a 40 percent
commission basis for Reynolds'
Nationalist party and commit-
tee. J. Victor Malone heads this
group of professional fund rais-
ers, a group that includes Joe
McWilliams. Among other cities,
they have already visited Boston,
Newark and Cleveland. In Cleve-
land, persons who inquired of the
Chamber of Commerce as to their
fund raising, were told "not to
give" by Randall M. Ruhlman,
manager of the Chamber of Com-
merce.
It can safely be expected that
Reynolds and his Nationalist
Party will intensify rather than
diminish their activities. Their
current plans call for an ending
of the war before they really be-
gin an "all-out" campaign. They
hope to ride to power on a post-
war discontent and depression
that they see as inevitable. It is
up to us, who believe in democ-
racy, to see that no postwar de-
pression occurs and to be ever-
vigilant against the activities of
rabble-rousers.

The great majority of Seattle Jews were very angry
and sought to reply to Berger's charges in the column s
of their local Anglo-Jewish paper. The paper "subsi-
dized" by the Jewish Welfare Federation of Seattle re-
fused to print the answer of the Zionists, even when the
latter offered to pay by inserting an advertisement. The
powers that run the paper declared that this wit, "a
controversial topic" and therefore, they would not print
the views of the vast majority of Seattle Jewry.

DO YOU WANT THE SAME THING TO II APPEN
IN DETROIT?

This is the danger here. Isidore Sobeloff, who di.
rects the Federation here and a handful of Federation
officials, have the power to dictate what the Jewish News
should print and what to omit. They have the power to
slant the editorial opinions of the Jewish News to suit
their own views. Because of the subsidy given to the Jew-
ish News out of public funds to date, it would only be

powerful enough, as it is, because it controls the com-
munal purse strings. Why give it the power over public
opinion, over the news which its donors read?
