J.D.C. AIDS JEWISH CHILDREN OVERSEAS

Good, hot school lunch—result: healthier, happier, brighter children
In the Alliance Israelite Universelle Schools in North Africa and the
Middle East. The Alliance Schools, which receive part of their funds
from the Joint Distribution Committee, have made tremendous strida
in improving the health of children attending classes there. Support of
these schools is only part of the extensive aid to Jewish educational
and cultural institutions, whirl: is made possible by funds received
through the current J.D.C. nationwide campaign for $46,570,000.

BUCHAREST (WNS) — Dr.
Ernest Marton, International Red
Cross representative for Cen-
tral Europe, declared upon his
arrival from a tour inspection
of Austria, Hungary and Cze-
choslovakia that Dr. Richard
Lowenhertz, president of the
Vienna Jewish community during
the German occupation, had
been arrested as a collaborator.
The Vienna Jewish commu-
nity is now headed by Profs.
Heinrich Schurr and BenZion
Lazar, government appointees.
Dr. Marton said that there
are about 1,000 Jews and 6,000
part Jews in Vienna. At the
same time he disclosed that a
memorial meeting was held at
the grave of Theodore Hertz),
on the 41st anniversary of his
death, for the first time since
the "anschluss." Approximately
1,400 Vienna Jews are expected
to return from Theresienstadt.
Mr. Marton disclosed that 40.-
0.00 Jewish deportees have al-
ready returned to Hungary and
that 80,000 more are expected
to return. With the exception
of Bdapest, he said. there are
no Jewish children in Hungary.
He said the Jews were being fi-
nancially assisted by the Hun-
garian JDC, but that the funds
available were not sufficient to
meet the urgent needs of the
destitute tens of thousands.
Disclosing that Jewish com-
munities in Hungary are begin-
ning to revive their spiritual
life, Dr. Marton said the process
was being hampered by a dearth
of spiritual leaders. He said
harmony and cooperation was
marking the life of the Jewish
communities, with most pre-war
differences largely forgotten.
In Slovakia, he said, the re-
lief work is being conducted by
a Zionist leader, M. Neumann,
who established a "Jewish As-
sistance Committee" which is
operating two relief kitchens and
two sanitariums.
In Prague. the government is

their home countries. Many of

where there were still 8,000
Jews. There were about 30,000
Jews in Theresienstadt when the
camp was liberated by the Rus-
sians.

Favored Treatment
To German Jewry
Denied by Russia

BERLIN (WNS) — Only those
persons who were sent by the
Gestapo to concentration camps
for political reasons are to be
considered by the Russian mili-
tary government in Germany as
"victims of Fascism."
Since the status of "victims
of Fascism" entitles one to high-
er food rations and other advan-
tages, such as securing homes
and financial support, the seve-
ral thousand surviving Jews in
the Russian-occupied zone are
profoundly affected by the ac-
tion, for only a small number of
Jews were prosecuted for poli-
tical reasons.
Russian authorities are taking
the position that no racial dif-
ferences must exist in the ad-
ministration of the area, while
overlooking the fact that no
other racial group has been per-
secuted like the Jews in Ger-
many. Before this ruling, many
buergmeisters in Berlin gave
large food rations to the Jews.
But the new order has put an
end to the practice.
It is felt here that the order
places at tremendous disadvan-
tage the Jews who are returning
from the concentration camps,
since only persons who were im-
prisoned for "political reasons"
are entitled to benefit from the
larger clothing allocation.
Hindering the rehabilitation of
Jewish communal life here is the
fact the ruling freezing all bank
accounts. Thus the Jewish Hos-
pital, the only Jewish institution
left intact by the Nazis, is la-
boring under tremendous finan-
cial difficulties, particularly at a
time when gravely ill Jews are
returning f r o m concentration
camps. The hospital was known
to have had a fund of 180,000,-
000 marks before the war.
