Refugees Urge
Jewish State
Inside Germany
STOCKHOLM (WNS) — A
group of German Jews are plan-
ning to present to the United
Nations a plan for the creation
of a Jewish state within the bor-
ders of Germany, it was reported
here.
The originator of the proposal
are reported to feel that because
of the obstacles in the way of
securing a Jewish state in Pales-
tine, it would be more feasible to
set one up in the area between
the east bank of the Oder from
Stettin to Kustrin or Frankfurt,
along the Warthe and from there
to Kolberg on the Baltic coast.
The sponsors claim that they
could secure sufficient capital to
erect factories and take other
measures to ensure employment.
1,000 Jewish Orphans
Converted In Italy
LONDON ( WNS) — A com-
mission to combat the conversion
of Jewish orphans in Europe and
to guard their legal rights was
established here this week at a
meeting of major Jewish organi-
zations.
Prof. Cecil Roth, noted Jewish
historian, told the gathering that
more than 1,000 Jewish children
were converted in Italy. Compar-
ing the situation with the forced
baptisms that were prevalent in
Portugal in the 15th century, he
said "dire historical consequences"
will follow if the present trend
remains unchecked.
At the same time it was dis-
closed by Rabbi Isidor Grunfeld
that representatives of the rab-
binate had been denied access to
baptized Jewish children among
a group of Dutch war orphans
recuperating in Englnd.
Mrs. Roosevelt Says
Immigrants Should
Americanize Names
NEW YORK (WNS) — Mrs.
Eleanor Roosevelt, in an article
in Liberty magazine, declares that
foreign names are a barrier to the
successful amalgamation of the
American people and that if im-
migrants were to Americanize
their names they would add to
the unification of the nation.
Foreign names, according to
Mrs. Roosevelt, have retarded
unity in the United States be-
cause they "often segregate peo-
ple as much as color or religion
and keep them tied to their par-
ticular backgrounds and the home-
lands from which they come."
