Why A Jewish War Veteran's Organization By ARCHIE H. GREENBERG National Commander, J.W.V. A correspondent of one of the Anglo - Jewish newspapers has written a letter tc• the editor urg- ing that the J.W.V. immediately disband the newly organized Frances Y. Schlanger Post, of Boston, the first all-girls post or- ganized by any veteran organiza- tion. Just why this irate letter-to- the-editor writer should urge dis- solution of J.W.V.'s first all-girl post (a second one has since been organized in New York) is not clear; it would be more logical to urge the dissolution of the en- tire Jewish War Veterans organi- zation. For surely, it is nothing more than sex discrimination to forbid female Jewish war veterans from organizing if male Jewish veter- ans are given that prerogative. The letter writer in question objects to our all-girl J.W.V. post in much the same manner that various persons have critized the entire J.W.V. in the past. In brief, he declares that an all-Jew- ish girls' post tends to promote segregation; that it is un-Ameri- can and that it is "an example of Old Testament bigotry and in- tolerance" that does little honor to the memory of. a Jewish girl "who died for democracy." States, by their very service to their country, have proven their Americanism is not diluted, but rather enhanced, by their Juda- ism. 10 to 15 Per Cent Veterans Asks State Nets For Fishermen In Palestine LANSING — Jewish fishermen in the Mediterranean and Red Seas won't be able to use illegal fish nets seized recently in Green Bay waters by Michigan conser- vation officers. THEY DID NOT GIVE THEIR MONEY SO THAT IT WOULD BE USED TO BUILD UP A PRIVATE BUSINESS. THEY DID NOT GIVE THEIR MONEY SO THAT CERTAIN OFFICIALS MIGHT ENHANCE THEIR PRESTIGE BY PUBLICITY. Right now Detroit Jewry is being asked to contribute to various causes. The need for charity has never been greater than it is now, in this darkest hour in the history of our people. A million and a half of our brethren in Europe are completely destitute. Couldn't they use the $20,000 which has been spent to subsidize the Jewish News? Common decency would say that to give charity funds to a private firm is to "pervert" the meaning of charity. znamessical..m...aa.amo.c.mrsaver- (Continued from Page 1) main Synagogue on the corner lot. Government regulations at present restrict the amount to be spent upon such a building. When the priorities are relaxed further building operations will be started. Beth Aaron Congregation, which aims to serve the Northwest sec- tion, has a membership of about 100 now, At present services are being conducted at the home of Aaron Margulies, the president, at 18240 Ohio. Mr. Margulies founded the congregation about two years ago and since then, has been one of the main factors in its growth. We have received various letters from readers who are shocked that $20,000 has been given to a private en- terprise, one might say, behind the backs of the people, The contributors should have had a direct voice in the matter. It is such tactics which hurt the cause of charity, On the positive side, the Jew- ish War Veterans are an asset to American Jewry because by their very existence they are a dramatic every day reminder that Jews are patriotic Americans, that like every other American group they fought and died in the service of their c o u n t r y.
