NEW YORK—"The strong in-
terest which Jews south of the
Rio Grande have in aiding their
suffering co-religionists in liber-
ated Europd is expressed in their
eagerness to participate fully in
the work of the J.D.C.," Miss Ger-
trude D. Pinsky who has just re-
turned from four of nine Latin
American countries, declared.
"The 125,000 Jewish refugees
who came to Central and South
America since 1933 have become
fully integrated into the life of
the general and Jewish communi-
ties in which they live," Miss
Pinsky told a press conference.
"Not only have they been instru-
mental in improving economic
conditions in some areas, but their
presence has helped to stimulate,
strengthen and rejuvenate Jewish
life in some of the countries,"
Miss Pinsky said.
Reporting on the J.D.C. pro-
gram in Latin America before she
leaves for Paris where she will
serve the Joint Distribution Com-
mittee as a child-care specialist,
Miss Pinsky pointed out that dur-
ing the first six months of this
year the Jewish communities of
16 Central and South American
countries raised close to $200,000
for relief of overseas Jewry.
In some countries the Jewish
refugees who arrived since 1933
outnumbered the existing Jewish
population. More than 5,000 Jews
settled in Bolivia since the rise
of Hitler; Bolivia had a pre-1933
Jewish population of only 150.
Chile now has 12,000 Jewish re-
fugees, whereas prior to 1933
there was a Jewish population of
8,000.

One of the Pieces
In announcing that Harmony
has been restored in American
Zionism, Dr. Wise quipped:
"Peace has broken out in Zion-
ism, and I am o n e of the
pieces."
Rabbi Wise recalled that he had
first warned aginst Hitler in 1922
soon after the assassination of
Walter Rathenau, the Jewish for-
eign minister of the German Re-
public, when the American ambas-
sador described Hitler as the
leader of the gangsters who mur-
dered Rathenau.
Eleven years later in January,
1933, Hitler became chancellor.
Five days before that, Dr. Wise
revealed, he sent an emissary to
consult with 30 prominent Jews
in Germany regarding the Nazi
menace; 29 made a contemptuous
reply and declared that Wise
should not meddle in European
Jewries. Now out of the 30, only
one is alive, the others were
killed by the man, who they said
would never come to power.
Lists Congress Aims
Dr. Wise listed the ideals of
the Jewish Congress as: Equal
rights, a Jewish Commonwealth
in Palestine and Democratic unity.
"I claim nothing for myself as
a Jew which is not equally the
right of every American citizen,"
declared. the rabbi. "Whenever an
American is hurt unjustly there
I am hurt.
"There is really only one Jew-
ish right, the fundamental right
of the Jews to live on, to live
as a people,
"We in Jewish life need Demo-
cratic unity. We had a gleam of
it at San Francisco when we
united on the Human Rights
Declaration."
Dr. Wise declared that the Jew-
ish Congress, which has just been
reorganized, would work with
other minorities, with labor and
with other Jewish groups to safe-
guard the rights of all American
citizens without regard to race
or creed. He declared it was the
business of statesmen to keep
7 'danger from the doorstep.
