NEW YORK (WNS). — The
three-day session of the National
Conference of Jewish Social Wel-
fare concluded here with a round
table on overseas relief at which
Louis H. Sobel of the Joint Dis-
tribution Committee, who served
as chairman of the discussion,
outlined the staggering tasks
confronting all agencies now pro-
viding aid to Europe's starved
and destitute millions.
Mr. Sobel laid particular stress
on the plight of the Jewish sur-
vivors of the Nazi holocaust and
outlined briefly the Joint Dis-
tribution Committee's broad pro-
gram which has made possible
the survival of ninny of the re-
maining European Jews, and
which is now maintaining ninny
of the 1,250,000 who are still
alive on the continent.

REBUILD SYNAGOGUE

N.Y. Kosher Butchers
Buy From Farmers

NEW YORK.—The flow of
poultry directly from upstate
farms to four cooperative kosher
slaughterhouses in Brooklyn and
Queens will begin next week.
The new arrangement should
bring into the city 300,000 to
400,000 additional pounds a
week.
.
This will be enough to keep
from 600 to 800 retail shops
open at least two or three days
a week. Most of the kosher poul-
try shops have been closed for
several weeks due to inability to
get supplies at ceiling prices.
The cooperative buying and
slaughtering venture, approved
by 600 Brooklyn members of
the federation, bypasses two mid-
dlemen in the trade—the direct
receiver and the wholesaler.
About $25,000 has been sub-
scribed for the first group pur-
chase.
