Streicher was the Jew baiter, but Ros-
enberg was the Jew exterminator. From
the first day that Hitler adopted the theo-
ries of Rosenberg, the implacable hatred
of the Nazis was visited upon all Jews
who had the misfortune to come in con-
tact with the Nazi hordes. There was no
-escape for the Jew for he was, according
to the Rosenberg dog - ma, the source of
corruption and contamination and had to
be exterminated if the world was to be
healthy and virile.
Streicher at his worst portrayed the
Jew as lecherous, greedy, paunchy and
subversive. But according to Rosenberg
the Jew was responsible for the degener-
ation and decay of Germany and, as long
as this poisonous Semitic influence was
suffered to exist, there was no hope for
a German or European renaissance.
Upon these theories Hitler proceeded
to erect the Nazi structure. The theories
of race had so pervaded and permeated
every pore of Hitler's being that he never
once failed to attack the Jews in any
tirade he delivered. He may have at-
tacked the British, the Bolsheviks, the
plutocrats, the French at different times,
but at all times it was the Jew who was
the villain and criminal.
Now that Rosenberg and Streicher are
in Allied hands, it would be entirely
proper to turn them over to our best
psychiatrists for a searching examination.
It would be in the interest of science and
humanity to find out why these sadistic
creatures acted as they did. It is easy
enough to call them evil, bestial war crim-
inals, but that does not answer the im-
portant questions: How did they get that
way? What is the background for their
brutality?
If we are to make an honest attempt
to prevent a recurrence of Nazism and
war we must make the most painstaking
and thorough study of the causes of
Nazism and war. These two men are not
only products of Nazism, but architects
of Nazism, and we should try to learn
what made them what they were and are.
We can be happy that the racial su-
periority dogmas of Rosenberg have no
application in Germany today, but we
cannot and should not forget that this
subtle, poisonous dogma of racial inequal-
ity can be brought into being elsewhere
and against other peoples. It must be
combatted with scientific knowledge until
the man in the street knows that racial
superiority is a lie.
Books for Europe
Men can not live by bread alone, and
this is especially true of the Jews. From
earliest antiquity the Jewish people have
respected learning. Learning was held
above wealth and above breeding. In the
less collections. They destroyed every
Jewish book they could find.
The present wretched survivors of the
holocaust, now creeping back to their
former homes, find not only their entire
economic system in ruins, but also all
their cultural possessions, all that they
inherited from generations of learned an-
cestors, destroyed. American Jewry must
not only feed and clothe European Jewry.
It must also aid the survivors in rebuild-
ing their culture.
The American Jewish Congress has
started a drive for books to be sent to
the war-torn European Jewish communi-
ties. Books, especially Hebrew and Yid-
dish, are desperately needed. Books of a
religious nature, Sephar Torahs, and books
of general cultural value are needed.
Everyone has books that he can spare.
Make up a bundle and take them to the
various depots designated.

appointment very seriously, and
has told intimates that the war
crimes trials will be of the nature
of courts-martial, with no long-
drawn-out processes of the civil-
ian type . . . Jacob Epstein, a
retired merchant living in Balti-
more, who is a philanthropist,
traveler and student of world
affairs, asks us this pertinent
question: "Why not ask this and
future peace conferences to
adopt Esperanto as the univer-
sal language?" . . . Mr. Epstein
believes that Esperanto—which,
you recall, was invented by Dr.
Ludwig Zamenhoff, a Polish Jew
—should be the language in
which all proceedings should be
conducted at the peace confer-
ence.

Heinrich Himmler
Henrich Himmler, head of the Gestapo,
who committed suicide by swallowing
some poison when the British captured
him, will go down in history as the great-
est murderer who ever lived.
The suicide of such men as Hitler and
Himmler is psychologically indicative.
They feel that they deserve the rope and
expect to get it, so they kill themselves.
How different is their attitude to that
of a Napoleon in this respect. Napoleon,
too, in the pursuit of his ambition, was
the cause of the deaths of millions, but,
outside of the military phase, the career
of Napoleon was marked by generosity.
At any rate, Napoleon did not feel that
he should be shot or hung, and when his
cause was lost he made his own way to
the doors of his conquerors and threw
himself on their generosity.
But the Hitlers and the Himmlers
know they do not deserve any generosity,
so they kill themselves.
Fantastically enough, in the loot of a
million dollars which Himmler had se-
creted away for "that rainy day," more
than seven thousand pounds of Pales-
tinian currency was found and the theory
has been expressed that Himmler even
nursed the idea of hiding in Palestine as
a disguised Jewish refugee.
Having come in contact and murdered
so many Jewish refugees, he doubtless
felt he knew enough about them to pose
successfully as one of them.
We may be thankful that he has been
caught and is dead before his feet could
have sullied the soil of the Holy Land.
