The Art School of the Jewish
Community Center will open the
annual exhibition of student
work on Monday evening, May
28, with a reception in the Con-
ference Room at the Center,
Woodward at Holbrook.
The work done in the advanced
group under the direction of
Leon Makielski is represented by
a collection of oil paintings, pas-
tels, water colors, and charcoal
drawings. The elementary group
under Stanley Twardowicz shows
work in the same media.
A jury consisting of M. Ma-
kielski, Mr. Twardowicz, Henry
Bernstein, A. Jay Boorsnut, direc-
tor of the Arts and Crafts
School, and Mrs. David B. Werbe
will judge the pictures and award
prizes for the best work.
The following will be hostesses
for the reception. Mrs. Edward

Moishe Smith, Jewish Community
Center Art School student, has
received a national award for
best arf work in Michigan. In
recognition of his work. P. Lehm-
kuhl, president of the U. S. Time
Corp., sponsors of the award,
wrote as follows:
"It is a pleasure to inform you
that in the recent Scholastic Art
Award Contest held at the Cer-
negie Museum in Pittsburgh, you
were awarded honorable mention
in the Ingersoll Art Awards,
sponsored by the U. S. Time
Corp. After the award of one
national prize in Michigan by
the seven distinguished judges,
your work was selected as the
best in your state."

The Detroit Friends of Opera
are reverting again to the Czech-
oslovakian repertoire when the
first local performance of "Rus-
alka" by Antonin Dvorak will be
given this Sunday evening, May
27, in the Shrine Auditorium of
Masonic Temple. Two years ago
Smetena's "The Bartered Bride"
aroused a great deal of enthu-
siasm.
Herman Adler will direct the
performance as he has frequently
done at the opera in Prague.
Richtarik, known for his scenic
creations at the Metropolitan,
will have charge of the stage di-
rection.
The singers, chorus and dancers
are all well known Detroit ar-
tists, many of whom have ap-
peared in previous productions
of the Detroit Friends of Opera.
Marguerite Kozenn, Rose Delnar
and Avery Crew will fill the
leading roles. The assisting or-
chestra is selected from the mem-
bership of the Detroit Symphony.
Julius Chajes, as artistic direc-
tor, has organized the perform-
ance.

its nomination and election meet-
ing. on Monday, May 28 at the
home of Mrs. Harry E. Weingar -
