On Memorial Day it is fitting that we is no need to abrogate the White Paper Pearson, the Washington colum-
nist, says that these representa-
pay tribute to the men who have given as there are so few Jews who could go tives of the American people did
their lives for their country. It is esti- to Palestine even though they were most not know of the use of their

mated that about 8,000 Jewish service-
men have made the supreme sacrifice in
this war. About 180 Detroit Jewish sol-
diers, Marines and fliers have been killed
thus far in World War II.
While we honor the dead, we must not
forget the living. The Jewish War Vet-
erans of America, organized in 1896, is
a source of great potential strength to
the Jewish community. The JWV could
become the largest and most powerful
organization in Jewry. In this war alone
there are more than 500,000 Jewish serv-
icemen. In World War I there were more
than a quarter of a million. Nearly 800,-
000 Jewish veterans will, therefore, be
eligible to join the JWV.
Because the JWV is composed of men
who have demonstrated their love of
country by their war service, the organi-
zation's statements and opinions will re-
ceive respectful attention in all circles,
Jewish and non-Jewish. The JWV can
be a potent influence in combating anti-
Semitism. It can do a great deal of good
in fighting Fascist tendencies. The JWV
will have entry into places from which
other Jewish organizations will be barred.
It can make its voice heard in fighting
prejudice, in silencing canards, for its
members have spilled their blood for their
land.
Promoters are already trying to form
chauvinistic and extremely nationalistic
and fascist minded groups among the vet-
erans. This is where the Jewish War Vet-
erans of America can step in and show
up these promoters of isolationism and
hatred who seek to divide America so
that it will fall an easy prey to its
enemies.
The JWV members are men who are
not afraid to resort to action to silence
anti-Semites.

Gloomy Prospects

The prospects for abrogation of the
White Paper seems at this writing to
be remote and less promising than it has
been for a long time. The present condi-
tion is not caused by a change in British
policy nor is it caused by anything the
Arabians in or out of Palestine have
done. It is, curiously to relate, something
done by the Soviet Union.
If there would have been any large
migrations from Europe to Palestine, they
would have come from Romania, Hun-
gary and Poland and the Baltic States.
The number of migrants from Germany,
Austria, Czechoslovakia and Bulgaria
would have been limited because of the
fact that so few Jews could be found
there.
Although Poland, Hungary and Ro-
mania have not been incorporated into the
Soviet Union, yet the control exercised
over these countries by the Soviets is so
great that one could hardly expect them
to act independently in matters of emi-
gration and immigration. Up to now
there has been practically no flow of
migrants in and out of the Soviet Union
and there is nothing to indicate that the
policy of the Soviet Union has changed.
Under these •
stances it would be

anxious to go there.

Incidentally, the activities of the Joint
Distribution Committee may be curtailed
by the Soviet control over those countries
where the needs are most urgent and
acute, if the Soviets should take the same
attitude toward the JDC as it took toward
UNRRA in the matter of feeding the peo-
ple of Poland.

Despite these gloomy prospects there
is one definite ray of sunshine. The Jews
living in these Soviet controlled lands
may be certain that anti-Semitic activities
will be ruthlessly suppressed should they
appear. The Soviets have not and will not
tolerate anti-Semitism.

A Statement of Principle

A publication which has existed for
years should, from time to time, restate
the principles upon which it was founded,
both for the benefit of the readers and
also to clarify the opinions of its editors
and publishers.

The Detroit Jewish Chronicle has been
published continuously for nearly 30
years. During that time it has given its
space to every Jewish cause. Its editors
have not hesitated to take a stand on
every topic of interest and importance to
Jewry.
Paramount in interest and in influence
upon the life of Jewry as a whole has
been Zionism. Historically, Zionism is the
greatest movement in Jewry in the last
1,800 years. Zionism has built a land, has
convertea a desert into a garden spot, a
plague-ridden waste into one of the most
healthful spots on earth. Zionism has
taken a language, a classical tongue, a
sacred tongue, and made it a living
tongue, the language of the market place
and the street. It has created a literature,
an art movement. It has created a new
way of life. Even the opponents of Zion-
ism cannot but grant that Zionism has
changed a people. It has made a producer
out of a luftmensch, a healthy tanned man
of the soil out of a wan ghetto dweller.

The Detroit Jewish Chronicle from its
first issue has supported the major tenets
of Zionism. From the first its readers
realized that Zionism was the very life-
blood of Judaism; that the Jewish wan-
derers needed a home wherein to rest
their weary feet and that the Land of
Israel, the scene of the Jews' greatest
glory, and the land towards which every
Jewish heart longed, should once more be-
long to its rightful owners.
The Detroit Jewish Chronicle has sup-
ported and will continue to support with
all its influence the goal of a Jewish
Commonwealth in Palestine. It will con-
tinue to aid the Jewish National Fund
and other Palestine land-purchasing agen-
cies, the Zionist Organization, the Jewish
Agency and all other groups which are
united in building a national home for
Jewry in Palestine. To do otherwise
would be to betray its readers, to stultify
its mission.
The Jewish Chronicle, while covering
the national and international news and
causes, will not neglect local news. It con-
siders everything that happens in the De-
troit Jewish community as in its province.
It has endeavored to serve impartially all
groups and all factions in Jewish life.

Commends Editorial
On Jewish Education

Paul Masserman, Editor,
Detroit Jewish Chronicle.
Dear Sir:
Permit me to congratulate you
on your brilliant and timely edi-
torial, "Education for Survival,"
in the May 4th issue of your
esteemed paper. Indeed, you
have taken the problem of Jew-
ish survival by the horns in trac-
ing it to the challenge of perpet-
uating the Jewish cultural-reli-
gious heritage by handing it on
to the young generation.
But do you really believe that
it is possible to give our boys
and girls anything resembling a
Jewish education in an hour or
two hours a week "release-time"
instruction? You write so in-
spiringly about the Bible, the
teachings of the Prophets and
the great rabbis, of which our
youth is totally ignorant. Re-
lease-time instruction can never
hope to accomplish more than
superficially scratch the abysmal
ignorance of our youth.
I am not opposed to release-
time instruction—after all, a lit-
tle is better than nothing. How-
ever, in order to generate in our
youth an understanding of the
treasures . of the 'Jewish past and
their pertinence for our time, a
more intensive application is in-
dispensable.
Durng a recent stay in Detroit
I was privileged to visit the

classes of your local Beth ye-
hudah Yeshivah. It was hearten-
ing to watch the youngsters—
boys and girls—from kindergar-
ten to post-Bar Mitzvah age, a p-
ply themselves with zest and
relish to the kind of intensive
Jewish study which alone holds
the key to a true understanding
of the teachings of the Prophets
and the Sages.
I am well aware that Hebrew
Parochial Schools are as yet not
very popular with the prepon-
derant majority of our parents
due to a fatal misunderstanding
—and ignorance, too,—of what
these schools stand for. The fact,
however, is that these schools
hold the only genuine and posi-
tive solution and answer to the
problem of Jewish survival.
Quite frequently in the recent
trying months, when each day
brought more harrowing news of
Jewish doom and destruction in
Europe, I derived courag e and
strength from watching Jewish
children studying with zeal and
enjoyment in some of our He-
brew Parochial Schools. I won-
der whether the fathers and
mothers of Detroit Jewish chil-
dren of school age would not
feel equally buoyed in spirit
were they to observe, as I did,
the youngsters at their studies
in the modern, tastefully deco-
rated and sunlight-flooded class-
rooms of Yeshivath Beth Yehu-
tlah on Dexter Blvd.
