Rush Building of $125,000 Addition
To Jewish Home for Aged; Site Bought

The Women's Auxiliary, Home
for the Aged, has more than
1,650 members now, it was
brought out at the 20th anni-
versary luncheon last Monday at
the Book Cadillac. More than
200 attended the affair. Philip
Adler, foreign news analyst, was
the main speaker.
The Women's Auxiliary started
20 years ago with less than 60
members. Actually there had
been a group of women who
since about 1912 had banded
together to aid the then Jewish
Old Folks' Home. It was recalled
how these predecessors of the
present Auxiliary would canvass
from door to door for funds to
help the old folks. Officers de-
clared they will seek to enroll
every Jewish woman in Detroit
in the Auxiliary.
The Auxiliary in 1935 launch-
ed a campaign for $100,000 with
the slogan "A New Home for
the Old Folks". This campaign
was continued in 1936 and with
the help of the community the
fund was raised. The Women's
Auxiliary also raised the money
to pay for landscaping the
grounds around the new home.
An addition to the present
home may be started this year
as soon as materials can be ob-
tained. A tract of 4 1 / acres ad-
joining the present grounds has

been purchased. The sum of
which has been con-
tributed by a business man will
serve as the nucleus of the fund
to finance the construction of
the addition. The new building
will house 75 more old folks. At
present there are 135 in the
Home.
Mr. Adler declared that Rus-
sia will be a tremendous factor
in the postwar era. The only
hope for peace, he stated, is
Russo-American cooperation. The
main postwar problem will be to
find jobs for all.
"There is one solution," said
Mr. Adler, "to avoid chaos, and
that is production for the for-
ign market. The best market
is Soviet Russia."
What the Russians have ac-
complished they have done with
the aid of American machinery,
said Mr. Adler. The Russians
need American aid and we can
keep our men employed produc-
ing goods for Russia, he asserted.
He declared that Russia's rec-
ord was unimpeachable and that
the best way to avoid fascism or
chaos was to help rebuild Russia.
Mrs. J. Koval' is president of
the Auxiliary. Mrs. D. Kliger was
chairman of the entertainment
committee, and Mrs. S. Weller,
chairman of the affair.
