Jewish Navy Cadets
Parade in Tel Aviv

TEL AVIV (Palcor). - Five
hundred Palestinian-Jewish naval
cadets paraded in uniform and
35 training craft sailed the Yar-
kon River, at the Maritime Day
Festival sponsored by the Pal-
estine Maritime League marking
the ninth anniversary of the
opening of the Tel Aviv port.
Senior officer in the Levant
area, Captain Guy Lydekker, in
a Maritime Day address, prophe-
sized a great future for the Pal-
estine merchant marine world.
"Any country, however small,
with a coastline such as Pales-
tine has, dependent on the sea,
as is Palestine, for the propor-
tion of its food and livelihood,
with many of its inhabitants en-
gaged in the fishing industry,
should turn its eyes seaward and
should cultivate a nautical out-
look," Captain Lydekker said.
A demand that Jewish Pales-
tine be given a number of Ger-
man freight steamships as a
small compensation for what Ger-
many has done to the Jewish
people, was voiced by Moshe
Pomrock, chairman of the Pal-
estine Maritime League.

Trieste Jews
Return to Find
`Utter Devastation'

TRIESTE (Palcor)-A scene
of utter devastation and disorder,
as a result of German vandalism,
was discovered by a small group
of Trieste's few surviving je w,,
when they re-entered Trieste's
largest synagogue, the fin est in
Italy, in Piazzi San Francesco
D'Apostrophe Assisi. The syna-

gogue has been locked and
barred since Yom Kippur, 1943,
when the last services were held.
The windows were smashed from
bombing raids which destroyed

surrounding buildings.
Inside, all the seatin g was re-
moved and the floor of the main

hall was littered with tens of
thousands of books looted from
private Jewish homes . whose oc-
cupants had fled or were deport-
ed. The Scrolls of Law were
found lying torn without covers
in the synagogue ante-room.
Books from the magnificent Ii-
brary with Hebraica, containing
treasures dating back to the 17th
Century, were lying about in
utter chaos. All synagogue valu-
ables, silver, etc., were removed,
Already today, work of creat-
ing some semblance of order has
started and machinery for the
reorganization of community af-
fairs is under way, but Trieste
has far from settled down.
Before the terror started un-
der the German occupation, the
Jewish community in Trieste
numbered about 5,000. Today,
according to conservative esti-
mates, it numbers 200, 100 of
whom are Greek Jews and 100
Italian Jews. The months of
greatest terror were March and
April, 1944, by which time the
Germans were properly organized
in Trieste. First the Germans
took the wealthier members of
the communities, but ultimately,
the poorer Jews from the island
of Corfu were taken. No one
knows where they went. They
have vanished. Many (lied in the
trains onto which they were
loaded like. beasts."
