"M'mle. Modiste" Opera
To Be Played Apr. 24

Victor Herbert's musical mas-
terpiece, "M'Ile. Modiste," will
be the fifth offering of the 1945
season of All-Star Operettas giv-
en at the Masonic Temple under
the sponsorship of the Civic Light
Opera Association.
In reality it is a comic opera
and was written to order by Vic-
tor Herbert and Henry Blossom
for the grand opera soubrette,
Fritzi Schell, who on leaving the
Metropolitan Opera in New York
went under the management of
Charles B. Dillingham.
"Arlie. Modiste" has never been
revived on Broadway and only
occasionally in stock productions
here and there for a week. The
reason for this being the fact
that it is almost impossible to
find a prima donna sufficiently
adequate for the role.
Max Koenigsberg, managing
director of the Civic Light Opera
Assn., believes that in Margaret
Spencer, the operatic prima don-
na, who was last seen on Broad-
way in "Rosalinda," he has dis-
covered that rare combination of
singer-actress who will do suffi-
cient justice to the role of prima
donna.
"Ni'lle. Modiste" will be of-
fered for the week beginning
Tuesday evening, April 24,
through Monday, April 30, with
the exception of Friday night,
April 27.
