Council.
Names Committee
Following the decision of the
executive, Dr. Goldstein an-
nounced that he appointed a
committee consisting of Judge
Louis E. Levinthal of Philadel-
phia, Louis Lipsky of New York,
Ezra Shapiro of Cleveland, Dan-
iel Frisch of Indianapolis, and
Elihu D. Stone of Brockton,
Mass.
The American Zionist Policy
Committee declared the action
of the ZOA indicated a response
to the pressure of public opinion.
It said, "the gesture is vitiated
by insinuations directed against
Dr. Silver and his supporters,"
particularly "the baseless insin-
uation that Dr. Silver or his
followers have at any time de-
manded the elimination of Dr.
Stephen S. Wise." The American
Zionist Policy Committee de-
clared:
"The resolution adopted by
the Executive Committee of the
Zionist Organization of America
appeared to be a genuine effort
on the part of that body to
meet the universal demand of
American Zionists for unity in
the ranks, which was disrupted
by the enforced resignation of
Dr. Silver from the chairman-
ship of the Executive of the
American Zionist Emergency
Council and from the co-chair-
manship of the Council itself.
Opposed Dr. Silver
"The committee is headed by
a chairman who is among the
most bitter and notorious op-
ponents of Dr. Silver. All the
members of the committee, with
the exception of Louis Lipsky,
voted at the meeting of the
ZOA administrative council to
sustain the representatives of
the Zionist Organization of
America on the American Zion-
ist Emergency Council who forc-
ed Dr. Silver's resignation.
"Three of the five members of
the committee have, within rec-
ent weeks, made attacks on Dr.
Silver from the public platform.
Not a single member of the
committee represents the forces
in American Zionism which have
publicly demanded the recall of
Dr. Silver. The American Zion-
ist Policy Committee repudiates
this committee and expresses no
confidence in it."
