55 Cities Give
JDC Major Portion
Of Relief Funds
NEW YORK — Isidor Coons,
director of the 1945 Joint Dis-
tribution Committee National
Campaign, declared that 55 com-
munity leaders throughout the
country are making the JDC the
major beneficiary of community
campaigns for increased funds.
The JDC seeks to aid 1,500,000
Jewish refugees in Europe.
The national campaign direct-
or said that 55 communities had
allotted to the JDC 60 per cent
or more of the total funds they
will furnish to both the Joint
Distribution Committee Campaign
and the United Palestine Appeal.
Mr. Coons declared that Cleve-
land, in its division of funds be-
tween the JDC and the UPA,
has officially decided to grant
the JDC 60 per cent of funds
set aside for these overseas pro-
grams, Hartford, Conn., which
has raised its campaign total
goal from $304,000 in 1944 to
$504,000 this year, will make a
similar distribution of funds be-
tween the JDC and the UPA,' he
stated.
New York City, which pro-
vides the greatest revenue for
overseas needs of any commun-
ity in the country, has allotted
the JDC substantially the larger
portion of these funds, Mr. Coons
asserted.
Both Houston and San An-
tonio, Tex., have officially ad-
vised the JDC that they will
grant it the larger share of
funds to be set aside for over-
seas needs. Similar advice has
been given by Nashville, Tenn.,
Richmond, Va., Troy, N. Y., At-
lantic City, N. J., and New Hav-
en, Conn.
"Today the JDC has no re-
serves," Mr. Coon said. The
.JDC has been compelled to bor-
row a very large sum of money
to carry on its desperately need-
ed life-saving services until the
thousands of community cam-
paigns throughout America are
completed, and funds are made
available to it."
