As he stood with his hands over his head, the German tank trooper, holding a machine pis- tol, unloosed a torrent of words. Apparently the General thought the German meant him to sur- render his arms. He took his hands down to lift the holster, and the German fired. The Gen- eral's body was found where he was slain. The Jewish general was born of immigrant Jewish parents in Middletown, Conn. The General, who was only 45, rose from a Private in the Colo rado National Guard. He en- listed in the Cavalry in 1916. He served in the First World War as a Lieutenant and was decorated. He was commission- ed a Second Lieutenant in the Regular Army in 1920. He was a Lieutenant Colonel at the be- ginning of this war. He went overseas in January, 1942, as Chief of Staff of the Second Armored Division and served in the North African campaign. He was made a Brig- adier General in June, 1943. In Denver, General Rose's father, Rabbi Samuel Rose, 89, called upon his religious faith in the hope that the death of his son would be accepted by Jeho- vah as a sacrifice that will save the lives of others.
