THE SYNAGOGUE ON THE MARCH
U.P.A. HELPED DELIVER THEM FROM BONDAGE .
By RABBI JOEL S. GEFFEN
Associate Director of Field Activities and Community Service of the
Jewish Theological Seminary of America
A
SHORT time ago I listened
to an address by Professor
Selig Brodetsky, prominent Eng-
lish Jewish leader, which was
delivered at a Sabbath morning
service in one of New York City's
leading Temples. I was deeply
moved by his direct appeal to
the synagogue-minded members
of American Jewry to assume the
responsibility of preserving Juda-
ism for posterity. In fact, he
said that even as in previous per-
iods of Jewish history, a dying
Jewish community turned to the
virile one and said to it, "You
must carry on," so today Euro-
pean Jewry says to the American
Jewish community, "You must
carry on whether you will it or
not." The reaction amongst the
congregants on that Sabbath
morning was a very marked and
serious one.
During the past year I have
had occasion to broach this sub-
ject to many groups and to
witness the reactions of our peo-
ple in the great number of syna-
gogues which I have visited in
my official capacity.
It is evident that we are in
•
the very early stages of a great
revival of Jewish learning and
of Jewish living in America.
'1 here are some evidences of a
positive growth which are indi-
cative of the trend of tomorrow.
Recently in the course of con-
versation with the present of
a well-established synagogue, I
suggested the use of the phrase,
laying a foundation for Judaism
in America," for use in a let-
ter. He suggested to me the
substitution of the words, "re-
enforcing Judaism," in place of
"laying the foundation." In this
thought I believe is the germ
of the attitude which many lay-
men are taking toward this prob-
lem. Re-enforcing Judaism is
now becoming a by-word amongst
our thinking community leaders.
Positive Program
The impact of the forces of
the secular world will have to
be met by a positive program of
Jewish living. Subconsciously all
survivalist Jews realize the need
for a more consistent, more emo-
tional and more contentful way
of living in the American Jew-
ish community.
There is a willingness on the
part of many laymen to devote

a certain amount of self-disci-

Just as in ancient days the Jews delivered from the
oppressor in Egypt found new life in ErCt: Israel, so
today the Jews liberated from the Nazi tyrants are
finding freedom in the reborn Jewish National Home.
Above, left are a group of children orphaned by Nazi
brutality who' were smuggled out of France with the
aid of the Underground; above, right are refugees
from the Balkans, who worked in Nazi slave•labor
camps; below are a mother and child from France
who escaped where thousands perished. These men
and women and children were enslaved and persecuted
by the rulers of the lands in which they lived. They
travelled a long and arduous journey, over land and
sea, until now at last they have come home to Ereta
Israel. At this time, when Jews the world over com•

Another interesting reaction
