Belgium to Receive
Deported Jews

British Ease Ban
On Jewish Internees

LONDON (WNS) - A blue-
Print of the Belgium Govern-
int nes plan to repatriate 250,000
of its nationals who have been
deported to Germany includes
26,000 Belgian Jews who are still
believed to be alive in Germany,
it was disclosed here.
Ernest Frischer, Jewish deputy
in the Czechoslovakian National
Council, declared that there are
only 15,000 Jews left in the
fortress ghetto of Theresien-
stadt, Czechoslovakia, of the
more than 50,000 who were
known to be confined there last
summer.
According to reliable reports
reaching here it is estimated that
about 200,000 Jews had been
employed in Silesian war fac-
tories prior to the Russian drive.
Thousands of them have since
been moved to the interior of
Germany.

LONDON (WNS) -The Brit-
ish Government has decided to
re-admit to Palestine all Jews
who had been deported as illegal
immigrants to the island of
Mauritius, it was announced by
Colonial Minister Oliver Stanley.
He added that he could not prom-
ise when the Jewish internees
will be transferred from Mauri-
tius to Palestine "in view of for-
midable transport difficulties."
Speaking in the House of
Commons, the Colonial Minister
rejected the demand by some
members of Parliament that com-
pensation be paid to the surviv-
ors of the "Patria," the ship
which sank in Haifa harbor with
the loss of several hundred Jew-
ish refugees, after they were for-
bidden to land in Palestine.
The colonial minister also re-
plied to questions regarding the
methods of the Palestine police
in carrying out arbitrary arrests
and deportations.
"The recent outrages which
culminated in the killing of Lord
Moyne necessitated the most
drastic police measures in order
to suppress terrorism, including
the detention of terrorists sus-
pects," he said.

JDC Is Willing
To Arbitrate
Split With UPA

NEW YORK.-The Joint Dis-
tribution Committee, at a spe-
cial meeting of its executive com-
mittee held last Sunday, agreed
to submit to arbitration the un-
resolved differences between the
JDC and UPA in an effort to
reconstitute the National Unit-
(d Jewish Appeal for 1945.
This action followed receipt
of a telegram from Sidney Hol-
lander, president of the Council
of Jewish Federations and Wel-
fare Funds, requesting the two
major organizations in the UJA
to submit their differences to
arbitration.
Paul Baerwald, chairman of
the JDC, stated the differences
are as follows:
"The UPA proposed a first
division of $10,000,000 in• the
ratio of 60 to 40 per cent or a
first division of $25,000,000 in
the ratio of 58 to 42 per cent,
with the Jewish National Fund
traditional collection ceiling at
$1,100,000, and that JDC forego
the $ 6 0 0 , 0 0 0 countervailing
amount.
"The JDC proposed that the
first division be $25,000,000 in
the ratio of 60 to 40 per cent
respectively, the JNF traditional
collection ceiling to be $900,000
and the JDC to forego the $600,-
000 countervailing amount."

ROME - The Rome Jewish
Kehilla will vote March 13 to
pick a new chief rabbi of Rome
to succeed Dr. Zolli who became
a Catholic convert, Other issues
will also be taken up.
Ilachali, Hebrew paper pub-
lished by Palestinian soldiers
with the British armies in Italy,
printed an article recently warn-
ing that thousands of Italian
Jews are going over to Catholi-
cism, among. them many hun-
dreds of Jewish children who
were given shelter in monasteries
and in other Catholic institu-
tion
children are being con-
verted with the connivance of
their parents who are grateful
to the Catholic Church for aid-
ing them during the Nazi occu-
pation, and who wish to safe-
guard their children from future
racial persecution. The Catholic
Church, it • is charged, is making
a concerted effort to convert
Jews, and the Italian Jewish
leaders have made no effort to
combat this.
