Al to do altogether with the
humble origin of the people they
despised. Some of these might
have been saints or scholars and,
anyway, fine gentlemen, but no!
They were all bundled up in one
contempt because of their mod-
st beginning.
He used to hear of Jews being
black-balled in the club only for
the reason that socially they
didn't have the right start. Not
that black-balled Mr. Zilch was
found to be a bad character, or
was dishonorable in business
dealings or beat his wife, or was
guilty of any of the other vices
to which the human species is
heir. Zilch wasn't taken into the
club because his father was an
immigrant and a peddler once.
These observations have re-
mained sharply with the gentle-
man even unto now They have
`:,ecome more vivid in these times
when Jews suffer so acutely the
discriminations so disgraceful to
a democratic country.

New Ruling Hinted
On Palestine Quota
LONDON (Palcor) — The sit-
uation in May, when the remain-
der of certificates under the
White Paper will be exhausted,
"requires and is being given the
carefullest consideration, but we
aren't able to make an announce-
ment today," Viscount Cran-
bourne, Secretary of State for
Dominion Affairs, declared in re-
ply to an impassioned appeal by
Lord Strabolgi for the opening
of the doors of Palestine to the
surviving remnants of European
Jewry.
"The quota allowed by the
White Paper was not yet ex-
hausted," Viscount Cranbourne
said, adding that "the rate of
1,500 admissions a month could
not be raised, because Palestine
is suffering from a housing
shortage and economic condi-
tions which do not allow for an
increase of immigrants."
Right now some Jews are en-
route to Palestine following an
agreement .between the Govern-
ment and the Jewish Agency.
"The refugee problem is not
mainly Jewish," Viscount Cran-
bourne said, "no one denies that
the miseries of war bore down
on the Jewish race harder than
on others, but it would be wrong
to think we could deal with the
Jews as separate from other dis7
placed persons."
Public examinations are now
being held in the United Hebrew
Schools to which parents and
board members are invited. Chil-
dren are tested in the Bible,
Hebrew Janguage and Jewish his-
tory.
In the David W. Simons
School an examination was held
Feb. 4 in Abraham Twe•sky's
class. Last Sunday, Feb. 11,
tests were given in Joseph Hag-
gai's classes. This Sunday exam-
ination will be held in Abraham
Schacter's classes. Examinations
will also be held in the follow-
ing classes: Mrs. Samuel Lehr-
man, Mrs. Rose Pfeifer and Ed-
ward Rubenfein.
In the Philadelphia - Byron
School examinations will be held
this Sunday, and Feb. 25 in the
following classes: Miss Leah
Pike, Miss Rose Pike, Louis Pan-
ush and Max Gordon. J. Cash-
dan's Talmud class will have its
examination March 4.
With the beginning of the new
semester new pupils will be ad-
mitted to all classes in the Unit-
ed Hebrew School system.
An hour has been added to the
morning pre-kindergarten classes.
They will meet from 9:30 a. m.
