Plight of Lithuanian Jews
Told in Letter to Detroiter
The following letter was received from a cousin in Kaunas
(Kovno) Lithuania, by Rose Lewis of 3203 Calvert. The letter
was sent to an uncle by a soldier in the Red Army. The uncle
is a relative of Rose Lewis and transmitted the letter to her.
The letter of the soldier was dated Sept. 15, 1944:
Dear Uncle :
It is difficult, very difficult,
for me to write this letter to
you. What Hitler and his follow-
ers did to the Jews of Lithuania
is impossible for the normal mind
to comprehend. Of our entire
family only Pena Sukenic and
Feivele, the child of my brother,
Zvi, who is somewhere in a vil-
lage, remain alive.
I was granted a five-day fur-
lough and devoted it to a search
for the child, but time didn't
suffice. I believe that I am on
the right track.
Grandmother, my aunts from
Vilkovlskas, Frieda and her hus-
band, the Sukenic family and
my brother and his family were
in the Kovno ghetto. Lipa Su-
kenic died in the ghetto. Grand-
mother and my aunts, Pesia and
Malka, were in the first group
of 10,000 ( there were 30,000 in
all) who were removed from the
ghetto and were transported to
an unknown destination. Not one
of them remains alive,
My aunts, Frieda and Rachel
and her (laughter, Ziporah, were
sent alone the same way in a
second transport. My sister, Ra-
chel, revealed great spiritual
strength in influencing her young
daughter, Pen ina, to join the
partisans. For a long time she
hid in villages under an assumed
name. She hungered and suf-
fered until the day of liberation.
Remained in Ghetto
My poor brother and his wife
emained in the ghetto until the
final day. You have undoubtedly

NEW YORK—Rabbi James G.
Heller, national chairman of the
United Palestine Appeal, issued
the following statement concern-
ing dissolution of United Jew-
ish Appeal :
"Through the channel of the
United Jewish Appeal, the Jews
of America (luring the past six
years extended their sympathetic
support to the United Palestine
Appeal as well as the Joint Dis-
tribution Committee and the Na-
tional Refugee Service.
"Statements concerning t h e
reasons for the dissolution of
the United Jewish Appeal can
serve no useful purpose in this
period.
"We have given the problems
of this year's campaign long and
careful consideration with pri-
mary regard for the welfare of
our brothers abroad who will
continue to be our chief concern.
"In conducting its 1945 cam-
paign the United Palestine Appeal
recognizes the authority and cen-
tral importance of local welfare
funds.
The needs of the United Pal-
estine Appeal and the Joint Dis-
tribution Committee are great.
Regardless of whether the up-
peals in their behalf are made
to communities independently or
in combination we feel confident
that American Jewry will meet
the expanded opportunities to
sustain the Jews of Europe in
this transition period and to as-
sure for the vast majc)tity of
them a permanent and secure
future in the Jewish National
Home in Palestine, In these
terms the United Palestine Ap-
peal calls upon the Jews of the
United States to give their sup-
port in unmatched degree to
Eretz Israel.
