2,000 Professors
Appeal to Roosevelt
For Land of Israel
WASHINGTON — On the eve
of President Roosevelt's depar-
ture for his historic conference
with other leaders of the United
Nations, a petition by 2,000
American university professors
was submitted to him urging the
chief executive to use the influ-
ence and power of his high of-
fice "to the end that the doors
of Palestine shall be opened for
free entry of Jews into that
country, and that there shall be
full opportunity for colonization,
so that the Jewish people may
ultimately reconstitute Palestine
as a free and democratic Jewish
Commonwealth."
Professors from more than 250
colleges in 45 states, including
more than 150 university presi-
dents, are among the signers of
the appeal to Mr. Roosevelt.
The petition stresses "the gi-
gantic catastrophe that has re-
emphasized the national home-
lessness of the Jews and their
need for a land to which they
may come as of right and not
on tolerance."
