Postwar Refugee
Problems Mapped

PlainTalk...

Successful adjustment in this
country of almost 300,000 refu-
gee immigrants since Hitler's
rise, their important contribu-
tions to American art, science,
industry and the national war
effort, as well as the prospects
of postwar immigration, were re-
ported at the annual meeting of
the National Refugee Service in
New York City last week.
Discussing the economic con-
sequences of recent immigration,
Felix S. Cohen, an aide of the
Department of the Interior, de-
clared.
"Immigrant inventors, enter-
prisers and laborers have played
an outstanding role in the de-
velopment of the nation's re-
sources."
"Our national standards of liv-
ing have risen most rapidly in
periods of high immigration.
While every wave of immigra-
tion in our national history has
served to create new jobs, new
forms of production, new bases
of trade and commerce, these
effects have been intensified in
the case of refugee immigration.
The refugee immigrants of our
day are creating new businesses,
giving empolyment to American
workers, and contributing new
processes and products to Amer-
ican living.
"If our vision of economic
and historic realities were not
so blurred by emotional antip-
athies, we would be competing
with other nations to attract
the greatest possible number of
r efugee immigrants so that our
lives and the lives of our chil-
dren might be most greatly en-
riched."
