Palestine Resolution
Again in Congress

WASHINGTON (WNS) — A
resolution calling for the estab-
lishment in Palestine of a free
and democratic Jewish Common-
wealth was introduced last week
in the House of Representatives
by Congressman James P. Geel-
an, Connecticut Democrat. The
resolution is identical with the
measure that was co-sponsored
by Rep. Ranulf Compton, who
was defeated by Geelan in the
recent elections.
Zionist officials here were re-
luctant to comment on the move
beyond stating that the Amer-
ican Zionist Emergency Council
was to meet in New York soon.
It is believed, however, that in
view of the State Department's
position on the question Zionist
leaders will not press action on
the resolution.

Europe.

workers and delegates of organi-
zations are urged to attend, as

Vaad Leumi Asks
Right to Tax Jews

Budapest Quartet
In Concert Monday

JERUSALEM (Palcor) — The
right to impose taxes on the resi-
dents of Jewish Palestine and
other rights which are generally
identified with statehood, will be
demanded of the Palestine Gov-
ernment by the Vaud Leumi,
Jewish Palestine's National
Council, it was revealed here by
David Remez, new chairman of
the executive of the Vaad Leumi,
At present the authority of
the Vaad Leumi is "unjustifiably,
unreasonably limited," he point-
ed out after stating that should
the Vaad Leumi be authorized
to impose taxes instead of rely-
ing on voluntary fund-raising as
now, it would draw up large
scale plans in connection with
important functions confronting.
Jewish Palestine in immigrant
absorption, the readjustment of
ex-servicemen to civil life and
the welfare of families of serv-
icemen, Jewish policemen and
constables.
Isaac ben Zvi, president of
the Vaad Le mi, dwelt on the
need of cos sting all forces
within Jewis )alestine, but em-
phasized tha the Vaud Leumi
and the Assephath Hanivcharim,
Jewish Palestine's Representative
Assembly, were recognized as
speaking for Palestine by the
entire community, by Jewish
communities abroad, and by the
Palestine Government.

Shaarey Zedek Pupils

To Plant 500 Trees

Pupils of the Shaarey Zedek
schools will plant 500 trees in
Palestine forests in honor of
Chanlisho Osher b'Shvat (Jew-
ish Arbor Day, which falls on
Jan. 29). Appropriate programs
are being prepared by the pupils
to celebrate this festival which
has been declared a national hol-
iday in Palestine. ...

MIGRATION

(Continued from Page 1)

has changed. To meet this new
rituation, arrangements have
been made dropping the emer-
gency set-up. Immigration cer-
tificates for Palestine can now
be obtained from the repre-
sentatives of the Jewish agen-
cy in the capital of every Al-
lied, neutral and liberated
country in Europe, including
Romania and Bulgaria.
"On receipt of the 'immi-
gration certificate, th e appli-
cant is automatically issued a
Palestine entry visa.
"The only limiting factor is
the shortage of shipping. In
spite of this, however, many
.hundreds of immigrants reach-
ed Palestine during November
and December, 1944. Under
the new arrangement a total
of 10,300 certificates were
made available for issue, at
th e rate of 1,500 a month,
from Oct. 1, 1944.
"A group of 630 Jewish
refugees passed through Istan-
bul on Jan. 7 on their way
from Romania to Palestine.
From this it will be seen that,
so far from introducing new
restrictions, the British Gov-
ernment have, in conjunction
with the Jewish agency, con-
siderably accelerated and fa-
cilitated immigration into Pal-
estine within the limits of the
quota."
