Nathan Fish- man sold $893,850 worth of war bonds, being one of the top bond salesmen in this area. Franklin Hills Country Club sold $2,285,650 in bonds. More than $1,250,000 worth of bonds were sold through Shaarey Zedek, according to Maurice Seligman, president of the Men's Club, who directed the drive. Temple Beth El reached the goal of $893,250 and Temple Isarel members bought over $200,000 in bonds. The Women's groups of Bnai Brith sold more than $700,000 worth of bonds to finance 60 Mercy Ships. The aim of the Jewish Agency at present is to bring to Palestine 20,000 Jewish children from liberated parts of Europe, George Landauer, Jewish Agency spokesman said. A delegation of relatives of Jews who were deported from Palestine to the Island of Maur- itius visited the chief secretary of the Palestine Government and urged that the government at least permit the return to Pal- estine of deportees who have relatives here. The delegation also asked the government to permit the sending of medical supplies, food and clothing to the Mauritius internees. Dr. Glazer to Debate On Religion in Schools The Rev. Joseph Q. Veterans. patriotic, historical and fraternal organizations paid tribute, in Mikveh Israel Cemetery, to the man whose efforts helped finance George Washington's army dur- ing the darkest days of the Revo- lutionary War. Salomon came to America in 1772, sided with the colonists and was thrown into prison in New York. Later he came to Philadelphia and aided Robert Morris in raising funds for the Colonial cause. Officials of he probate court of the Alpes-Maritime depart- ment notified the Paris office of the American relief agency of the bequest, made by Mlle. Marie Louise Wilner-Hofteufel, w h o died in a sanatorium at Vance on May 15, 1944. In explaining her reason for bequeathing her estate for Jewish relief, she de- clared : "I have. taken the decision to leave my fortune for the aid of these who I feel are the poorest among the poor because they are persecuted for their faith." Yivo Adopts $200,000 Budget for the Year NEW YORK (WNS) — The 19th annual conference of the Yiddish Scientific Institute clos- ed its three-session here with the adoption of a $200,000 budget to finance its activities here and in Europe during th's year. Addressing one of the ses- sions, Jacob Lestchinsky, re- search secretary of the section of economics and statistics of the Yivo, that no more than 3,- 500,000 Jews in Europe have survived of the 9,500,000 of 1939. Of the 6,000,000 Jews who perished, he said, 5,000,000 had lived in the countries under Hitler's domination. He said about 60 per cent of the Jews in the German-occupied areas had been killed and that the vic- tims constituted the most vital part of the Jewish people. A report of the research work of the Yivo was presented by Dr. Shlomo Noble, assistant re- search director. He pointed out that over 1,000 pages of printed material was issued during the year, including the second vol- ume of the "History of the Jew- ish Labor Movement in the United States." The work of the Research Training Division of the Yivo and its plan for transformation into a Graduate School for Jewish Social Studies was described. Romania Classifies Anti- Semites as Criminals BUCHAREST (WNS) — Per- sons found guilty of participat- ing in the persecution of Jews will come under the category of war criminals, subject to heavy punishment ranging from life- long imprisonment to capital punishment, it was disclosed here with the publication by the Ro- manian Minister of Justice of the draft of a law dealing with the punishment of war criminals. Within the purview of the law are all persons who (a) ordered cruelties inflicted on the Jewish population, or who themselves committed such acts, (b) ordered the establishment of ghettos or concentration camps for Jev.s, or deported them beyond the boundaries of the country, (c) participated in the transporta- tion of Jews for the purpose of mass-extermination, (d) guilty of organizing hard labor for Jews for the purpose of effect- ing their annihilation, (e) are guilty of ordering and applying inhuman treatment to Jews in concentration camps and in forced labor detachments, (f) proposed or issued decrees and regulations inspired by the Nazi racial laws, as well as those who carried out these decrees, (g) utilized the Romanian racial laws to their own advantage to en- rich themselves through the anti- Jewish measures. ' More Revisionists Kidnaped in Palestine JERUSALEM (WNS) — The kidnaping last week of two mem- bers of the Revisionist Organiza- tion by men who invaded their homes by posing as police offi- cials, bringing the total abduc- tions without recent weeks to seven, is proving a major prob- lem to the Palestine police who have so far been unable to un- cover a motive for the crimes. The first kidnaping occurred when Daniel Anowsky, an em- ployee of the Jerusalem Jewish Community Council, and an ac- tive metilber of the Revisionist Organize Lion, was taken from his home by three men, two of whom were disguised as British policemen. The second victim was Mor- dechai Korngold, 17, a member of the Revisionist Orthodox Youth Organization. Young Korn- gold was forced from his home by a group of three men, all of whom were dressed as British policemen. Music Study Club Recital A Success Miss Eugenic Fichtenova, a most talented violinist, was pre- sented in a recital Wednesday night at the Detroit Institute of Arts by the Music Study Club of Detroit. She showed a rare quality of strength which was almost masculine in her perform- ance. Her technical command of the violin was that of a well- seasoned artist. The program Miss Fichtenova presented was a most difficult one and called for all of the re- sources of the violin for its per- formance. A well attended audi- ence showed their appreciation by continued applause, in re- sponse to which Miss Fichtenova responded with three encores. Included in the varied program was the "Nigun" by Ernest Bloch, reflecting the spirit of Jewish lamentation and ritual song in its composition. French Jews Restored To Government Posts PARIS (WNS)—A number of French Jews who had been dis- missed by the Vichy regime from high government posts were re- stored to o ce this week by the new Frenc Government. Among them was, Paul Gruenbaum-Bal- lin, who was one of the first public officials to be dismissed from office under the Vichy rac- ial laws. At the time of his dismissal in July of 1940 he held the post as president of the section of the French Connell of State. Among the other prominent Jewish officials who were restored to office were Georges Cohen- Slavador and Pierre Seligman. M. Cohen Salvador, as a mem- ber on Premier Edouard Her- riot's special economic council in 1932 and president of the sec- tion of French Council of Stat,e was removed in November, 1940. M. Seligman, a member of the Central Jewish Consistory and a member of the General Union of Jews of France during the Vichy regime, was restored to his post as Councillor of State.
