The Northwest Hebrew Con-
gregation and Center held its
monthly meeting of officers and
trustees of the synagogue at the
home of Allan Waller on Mon-
day, Dec. 11.
Alexander Moss, president of
the Congregation, announced that
three Sepher Torim had been
prospectively donated by mem-
bers of the synagogue to per-
manently replace those loaned to
the Congregation. Appropriate
ceremonies will be held at a later
date to celebrate the occasion.
An open general meeting of
the membership and the com-
munity was agreed upon to be
held tentatively on Monday, Jan.
22. Ira G. Kaufman was appoint-
ed by president Moss as chair-
man on a committee on arrange-
ments. A prominent speaker will
be present and the entire north-
-west community is invited to be-
come acquainted with the accom-
plishments and aims of this new
synagogue.
David Miller, chairman of the
Sunday School committee, and
Max Goldsmith, first vice presi-
dent of the congregation, re-
ported that shortly the Hebrew
and Sunday Schools will actually
be functioning with a staff and
curriculum.
The success of the Sabbath
services conducted at the Bagley
School, Curtis and Roselawn, has
heartened the founders of the
synagogue. The Northwest Heb-
rew Congregation and Center is
not connected with any other
synagogue and all inquiries
should be addressed to the sec-
retary, Meyer R. Rubin, 17414
Washburn.

The Bnai Brith Hillel Founda-
tion and the Avukah, campus
Zionist organization, are to joint-
ly sponsor a Chanukah party to
be held on Saturday evening,
Dec. 17, at the Hillel Foundation
of the University of Michigan
at 9 p. m.
The plans for the party in-
clude Chanukah and Palestinian
songs to be sung by the Avukah
Choral Group which consists of
Sonya Heller, Judith Jacobs.
Zena Etkin, Sylvia Savin, and
June White, all of Detroit. The
group will be accompanied by
Ruth Wolkowsky, of Miami, Fla.
The entertainment will also fea-
ture Sonya Heller, who will ren-
der a number of original songs
In which she will accompany her-
self; and Edythe Levin, of Kew
Gardens, New York, monologist.
Latices and other refreshments
are included in the plans for the
party, according to Muriel Klein-
waks, of Hillside, N. J., and Bar-
bara Levin, of East Chicago,
Ind., co-chairmen of the Hillel
social committee.
Dancing and games will also
be featured at the party. The
proceeds of the "dreidel" game
will be allocated to the Jewish
National Fund. In charge of
plans for the Chanukah party are
Betty Korash, of Detroit, sub-
chairman of the social commit-
tee: and Zena Etkin, of Detroit,
student director in charge of the
social committee.
Chaperons for the party will
be Rabbi and Mrs. Jehudah M.
Cohen, and Dr. and Mrs. Saul
Cohen.

Rabbi Leon Frans, who was one
of Detroit's 10 delegates to the
American Jewish Conference, the
all-inclusive body of American
Israel organized to send a united
delegation to the peace confer-
( nee after victory, will devote
his sermon at the Sabbath eve
services of Temple Israel, Friday
night, Dec. 22, to a report of his
observations and his own work
at the second session of the
American J e w i s h Conference,
which met at Pittsburgh Dec.
3-5.
Rabbi Fram was especially ac-
tive in the planning of the com-
mittee . on the rescue of Jews
from Nazi-occupied Europe, and
in the discussions of tke "Amer-
ican Jewish Congress bloc." He
will discuss the great issues with
regard to the position of the
Jews in postwar Europe and in
Palestine, which occupied the at-
tention of the Conference.
At this service Lawrence Per-
nick, the son of Mr. and Mrs.
Nathaniel L. Pernick, will cele-
brate his Bar Mitzvah. After the
services the entire congregation
will be the guests of Mr. and Mrs.
Pernick at a reception honoring
their son.

Youth Education Lekgue
Prepares for Fund Dive

Mrs. James V. Browne, gen-
eral chairman for the pledge fund
drive, selected the following com-
mittees to help her with the forth-
coming event of the Youth Edu-
cation League which will be- a
luncheon and show, on Wednes-
day, Feb. 21, at the Book-Cad-
illac Hotel:

Bloom and Mrs. Morton Yarrows
are in charge of arrangements.

Hostesses at USO

The Infant's Service Group
met at the home of Mrs. L. E.
Weingarden, Monday, Dec. 4.
Mrs. W. Katz and Mrs. E. Rosen-
feld were co-hostesses.
The Group served at the USO
on Monday, Dec. 11, and the fol-
lowing members were hostesses:
Mesdames W. Katz, D. Mattes,
S. Guttentag, M. Shepherd, M.
Simon, E. Rosenfeld, R. Perkus,
E. Shewach, G. Treeger, E. Sher-
wan, M. Fox, S. Koppelman, A.
Sklar, H Weingarden, W. Kaye,
L. Levin, J. Freeman, H. Good-
man, D. King, A. Goodman and
W. Stern.
Mrs. Sam Gross, in charge of
Bends and Stamps, reported a
large sale among the Group and
the Club also bought Bonds in
the Sixth War Loan Drive.
A check was mailed to the
Ruth Alden dress fund.
The elates of Dec. 6, 7 and 8
were set aside at the Red Cross
Blood Bank for the members and
their families.

The Shaarey Zedelc school pup-
ils held Chanukah assemblies last
Sunday where special programs
were presented stressing the sig-
nificance of the holiday. Each
student received a gift from the
Sisterhood of the Congregation.
Tuesday, Dec. 12, the Shaarey
Zedek teachers had a get-togeth-
er. They were addressed by Sim-
ha Rubinstein, educational di-
rector. Classes will hold parties
and pupils will exchange gifts
on Sunday, Dec. 17.

The Detroit Chapter of the
Hapoel HaMizrachi of America
will hold its annual Chanukah
celebration Saturday evening,
Dec. 16, at the home of Joseph
Koller, 4045 W. Buena Vista, at
8:30. All friends of the Pales-
tinian Religious labor movement

A total of $850,000 in war
Bonds has been sold through Con-
gregation Shaarey Zedek, accord-
ing to Maurice Seligman, chair-
man of the Bond committee.
Approximately $500,000 was
sold at the Bond rally held Mon-
day, Dec. 4, when the Jewish
humorist, Irving Davidson, was
the main attraction.
Shaarey Zedek is continuing
its drive until it reaches its goal,
which is to surpass the record of
the Fifth War Loan, when the
Congregation sold $1,260,000 in
Bonds. A committee is on hand
every evening at Shaarey Zedek,
except Friday evening. Bonds can

Bessie Kroenberg, national pres-
ident, who made her offical visit
to the department.
Mrs. Madelyn Rollins, presi-
dent of Lawrence Jones Ladies
Auxilary No. 190, entertained
Mrs. Kroenberg for brunch on
Saturday, and Mrs. Eva Mann.
president of Lt. Eli Levin Ladies
Auxiliary No. 230, entertained
her at a house party in the eve-
ning.
On Sunday morning, Dec. 10,
Mrs. Kroenberg addressed the
Men's Group of the Department
of Michigan at their special meet-
ing, and later appeared at the
meeting of the Ladies Auxiliary
Department.
Sunday evening, Mrs. Esther
Tenser entertained the National
president at her home, with a
buffet supper and cards.
On Monday afternoon, Dec. 11,
Mrs. Henrietta Neiman, national
hospital committeewoman and de-
partment hospital chairman, as-
sisted by co-chairman Mrs. Esther
Tenser and members of all
Units, visited the Marine Hospit-
al, at which time they dedicated
loud speaker ear-phones to the
hospital, also distributed cigar-
ettes, candy, plants, etc. to the
veterans. A regular program of
entertainment was scheduled.
