Yehudi Menuhin
and Eugene Ysaye

BAY CITY NOTES

An unusual tale of musical
affinity that revolves around the
Guarnerius violin of the late En-
gene Ysaye, was recently re-
vealed by Yehudi Menuhir fam-
ous genius of the violin, who will
be heard here at Masonic Audi-
torium on Nov. 6.

have attempted to identify Menu-
sin's big sweep of tone with some
previous parallel, have unani-
mously come to the conclusion
that the vanished art of the un-
forgettable Ysaye represented the
closest approximation.

making a recording in Paris of
Bach's "D minor partita" (The
Chaconne), Menuhin's priceless
Stradivarius suddenly required
repairs which would take some
time. But the recording had to
go on.

parable instrument with which to
complete the great work, Menu-
hin was able to obtain through
the graciousness of Ysaye's heirs
his matchless Guarnerius.
Then when Yehudi Menuhin
put bow to string, there occurred
one of the greatest revelations
in his life—about the tonal affin-
ity that existed between him and
the famous Belgian.
Confessed Yehudi Menuhin af-
ter the completion of the record-
ing, "It was the strangest thing,
there was no effort on my part
to play, I had just but to hold
the violin and it seemed to per-
form by itself."
Menuhin immediately sensed
the relationship of tone to his
own, became convinced of the
