MRS. HENRY WINEMAN

Community Center Wednesday
evening, Oct. 25, recalls that he
w as one of the first artists to
leave Germany after expressing
his feeling in no uncertain terms
toward Hitler and the new re-
gime.
Although happy to be return-
ing to America, where he had
previously studied and become,
an American citizen, Mr. List ex-
plains that he was naturally de-
pressed at the thought of leaving
so many close colleagues at the
Berlin Staats Opera, many of
whom were not as fortunate as
he in the eventual fate that was
dealt them.
"One day in 1933 I received
an invitation from Der Fuerher
to become an 'honorary Aryan'."
List's immediate refusal brought
forth upon him a flood of warn-
ings from all his friends to leave
the country at once, which he
finally did.
Shortly after his arrival to the
States, the deep voiced singer
became a permanent member of
the Metropolitan Opera Co., and
is noted for possessing the lowest
voice ever to sing there.
Mr. List is this year observing
his 29th anniversary in opera,
having made his debut with the
Vienna Volks Opera in 1924.
