II Odessa Donor Luncheon To Be Held Wed., Oct. 11 JUDAISM (Continued from page 2) there the inequitable economic order which had made life so in- secure in Europe. Since they came to a backward, sparsely set- tled country, they were able to create new social institutions. They established a National Fund which purchased land not for private profit, but in perpetuity for the Jewish people. Within the framework of capitalism Palestine developed the strong- est free labor movement and the largest network of cooperatives and collectives in proportion to population to be found in any free country in the World. The General Federation of Jewish Labor (Histadruth) has 126,000 members, constituting with their families 40 per cent of the Jew- ish Community of Palestine and dominating its political life. The Federation's activities include the creation and direction of collec- tive agricultural settlements, in- and transport coopera- tives, building guilds, educational institutions, cooperative finance institutions, maritime projects,' health insurance and unemploy-i ment relief. It has fought for and obtained working conditions and wages incomparably better than are to be found anywhere else in the Near East." In Palestine, Judaism may be given an opportunity of being an example to the world of how well a fellow can follow their religion in their political, economic and social life-we can be an out- standing example of the query of that officer who stood before those graves and asked "whether they could not learn to LIVE TOGETHER." Judaism has given to the world the concept of one God, the Old Testament and the Ten Commandments. We are a people of law and we have thru successive persecutions and mi- grations carried that law known to us as the Torah, into every civilized land. Now that we may have an opportunity to have the land from whence we originally came, can we make another great contribution . to civilization-can we show the world a state based on the true principles of religion --a state wherein there will be a full equality of rights-civil, economic, religious and cultural -wherein poverty and injustice shall be no more? If Palestine is restored, Judaism must accept the challenge-to show the world how well Jew and Jew, Arab and Jew, can LIVE TOGETHER. We will accept this challenge and perform it well if we worship God as expressed by our Proph- ets. Isaiah answered in these words. "Bowing the head as a bulrush is not enough. To adorn oneself with sackcloth and ashes is not enough. But this is the way to God-to loose the fet- ters of wickedness, to undo the bands of the yoke, to deal one's bread to the hungry, to cover the naked, to shelter the home less and the outcast. And in our Sabbath prayers we repeat the words of Micah in the truest definition of religion yet given by man: "It hath been told thee, 0 man, what is good, and what the Lord doth require of thee: Only to do justly, and to walk humbly with thy God." The women of the Odessa Pro- gressive Aid Society are sponsor- ing a donor luncheon on Wed- nesday, Oct. 11, at 12:30 p. m.
