DETROIT JEWISH CHRONICLE and The Legal Chronicle

THE BRANDES SCHOOL AT TUCSON STARTS
SIXTH YEAR OCTOBER FIRST

The Brandes School at Tucson
commences its sixth year Oct. 1.
In the past, Jewish families who
wanted to have a child in Tucson,
either had the mother come with
him or the whole family had to
uproot itself, since there was no
private school available to them.
The emotional tension, huge ex-
pense, and disrupted family and
business life resulted in a cost
too great to be justified in many
cases. The establishment of this
school makes this no longer neces-
sary.
This unique institution has
been filling a vital need for Jew-
ish boys and girls from six to 16
years of age, for whom the cli-
mate of Tucson is advantageous.
It is of particular importance to
children suffering from asthma,
sinusitis, rheumatic fever, delicate
health.
A resultful program of health
care, education, and recreation
has been evolved which is especi-
ally designed for the proper hand-
ling of such children. An extra-
ordinarily large and well-trained
staff is maintained to assure the
utmost in individual care and at,
tention. A school nurse and a

house mother reside on the prem-
ises to look after the physical wel-
fare of the children. For the most
part, the life of the child is out-
doors in all the glory of the
Southwest.
The school is located just out-
side the city of Tucson, Ariz.,
within convenient reach of every
facility a child may need. Situ-
ated in the health-giving desert,
it is fully modern in every re-
spect with every convenience to
insure the utmost in sound health,
care and comfort. The well-de-
signed dormitories, classrooms,
and play fields add much to the
happiness and well-being of the
students. The school is on 10
acres of ground, beautifully sit-
uated on a mesa commanding a
view of the four mountain chains
which surround Tucson.
The directors are sponsored by
well-known leaders such as Dr.
and Mrs. Stephen S. Wise, An-
gelo Patri, the educator, Samuel
Sollender, executive director of
the Young Men's and Young
Women's Hebrew Associations of
New York, many outstanding
physicians, and others.
The Brandes School at Tucson
has achieved a splendid reputa-
tion for success with boys and
girls in health and educational
advancement.

I AM A WAC

By

LT. FREDDIE BOYLE
Peggy Murphy is a typical little
Irish Wac as you may well gath-
er from her name. She used to
be our acting First Sergeant
before she went overseas in
March. Today she writes to us
from "somewhere in England"
and her letters glow with en-
thusiasm and the excitement of
living in another country with
the war at her very door.
She writes, "I can't help won-
wering what sort of mental pic-
ture you have of our life over
here. It was a blank in my own
mind not so long ago, and I'd
have given anything for some
first hand information." And
from the details that follow I
know she still remembers how
very blank our minds really are
about the life of Wacs in a
foreign world.
About her job, Peggy says,
"We came over expecting to do
a job—Well, we are doing just
that! But, unfortunately, we can-
not divulge the facts regarding
it." The work the Wacs are do-
ing is vital and very interesting,
we are sure of that. They must
feel very much a part of winning
the war, handling confidential
jobs, and knowing the immediate
importance of keeping secrets.
A worry to me has always
been if the Wacs have all the
water and soap they need, for
to keep happy one surely would
have to keep clean. But Peggy
has quieted my fears when she
writes, " . . . We can have all
the baths and showers we desire.
There is even a place for laun-
dry purposes in which we have
two electric washing machines,
tubs, basins, clothes lines, iron•
ing boards and irons. Then there
is a tailor shop where our clothes
are pressed (we keep mighty
sharp-looking) and laundry and
shoe repair services." So it
sounds very much like there
would be no excuse to get "gig-
ged" at inspection for a soiled
shirt or run-over heels.
"Passes aren't hard to get at
all, so we often catch a bus to
a nearby town for dinner and a
show, or to a dance at the Red
Cross . . ." writes Peg. "But
the favorite form of recreation
seems to be bicycling, which we
Americans have adopted in our
usual overwhelming fashion."

ROSH HASHONAH MESSAGE OF THE
SYNAGOGUE COUNCIL OF AMERICA

For the first time in four years
the good tidings of the imminent
victory over the enemy of all
civilization gladden our hearts as
we prepare to usher in the New
Year in the Jewish calendar.
Bright as the prospect for the
future may be, they, neverthe-
less, cannot efface from our con-
sciousness the tremendous sacri-
fices which the war exacted from
the United Nations. We, Amer-
ican Jews, especially, dare not
forget the unprecedented cruel-
ties perpetrated upon our broth-
ers across the seas by the mad
beasts who annihilated millions
of our people.
We shall appear before God
at the beginning of the New Year
with hearts made heavy by the
curse of war. Yet, we shall give
evidence of our desire and de-
termination to build a new life
upon the ruins of the old world.
Thus, we shall keep faith with
our sons who have made the su-
preme sacrifice on the battle-
fields in order that we may be
blessed with a better life. Upon
us will devolve the sacred duty of
establishing, with the help of
God, a system of living, "in
which iniquity shall close its
mouth, all wickedness shall be
wholly consumed like smoke" and
from which "the dominion of
arrogance" shall completely dis-
appear.
We are now confronted with
a double task,—that of bringing
the war to a speedy and success-
ful completion, and that of fight-
ing for a permanent peace with
the same initiative, vigor, en-
thusiasm and united determina-
tion that characterized our ef-
forts on the battlefield. That
task is not an easy one; yet,
with the proper spiritual con-
secration it shauld also be pos-
sible to achieve that undertak-
ing.
If humanity is to look for-
ward to the time when "nations
shall not learn war anymore,"
the men and women of every na-
tion must utilize their freedom
to learn and practice the art of
peaceful living to the fullest ex-
tent. Civilians as well as soldiers
who have adjusted their lives to

the needs of war m

ment of a permanein peace.
Judaism teaches u that Cod
the Creator of a harii,enious
verse, is also the source of lia r.
monious, peaceful livirg together.
In His Infinite Goodness He out•
lined for us the paths that lead
to a permanent peitee. If th e
individual Jew will but respond
to the season's call for Teshuvah
(repentance) and return to th
life of the Torah, he will be lay. ,

try, he will create the nucleus
of a society that will strive for
the brotherhood of man based on
the realization of the Fatherhood
of God.
May the year 5705 bring a
speedy victory to the United Na.
tions, healing to our suffering,
