A Rabbi's NewYear Greeting to Jews in the
Armed Forces

Charles T. Gellman
Re-elected Head of
Rabbi Leon Fram, of Temple Israel, has written the Detroit Young Israel

following letter of New Year Greetings to all the men
and women of his Temple household who are in the
armed forces of the United States:
"Dear Friend:
When the sun sets on Sunday, Sept. 17,
then, according to the Jewish calendar, the new
year 5705 begins.
May the New Year see the beginning of
peace, world-wide and permanent!
May the New Year see the remnants of
the Jewish people rescued from their mortal
enemies, their lives protected and their rights
guaranteed throughout the world, and a home-
land established for them, which shall be a
refuge in time of peril and an opportunity to
contribute the gifts of the Jewish spirit to all
other peoples!
May the New Year find you well and safe,
and bring you back to the happiness of your
home!
May the New Year see the new building of
your congregation—Temple Israel—rise upon
its foundations, a beautiful shrine for the wor-
ship of God and the teaching of righteousness
and peace!
With Holy Day greetings and New Year
blessings, I am
Sincerely yours,
Rabbi Leon Fram."

Must Begin Praying for Victory Over
Mankind Itself

By RABBI LEON FRAM
At every New Year service for the past several
years we have prayed for the victory of mankind over
Nazism.
This New Year we go to our synagogues in the con-
fidence that our prayer is being answered, and we give
thanks to God for the victory of the United Nations,
Now we must begin praying for the victory of man-
kind over itself. Let us pray that the victorious powers
shall possess the self-discipline and the wisdom necessary
to build a permanent peace securely based on universal
justice.
As Rabbi in Israel, I greet the Jewish community in
Detroit with the New Year wish that Jewish communi-
ties all over the world may speedily be rescued from the
Nazi program of slaughter, and may once again enjoy
the elemental rights of human freedom.
As President of the Zionist Organization of Detroit,
I express what I believe has become th( aspiration of the
entire Jewish community of America—that we may
exercise the privilege of our strength and prestige as a
Jewish community in a free land, to assure the establish.
ment of an internationally secure and universally recog-
nized Jewish homeland in Eretz Yisroel.
May the New Year 5705 find our own Jewish com-
munity building for the worship of God, for education in
our faith, for the development of our social services, for
the meeting of our human needs and for cooperation with
all civic agencies in enhancing the life of our city.
