Senator Homer D. Ferguson
Sponsors Emergency Rescue Bill

Dear Mr. Margolis:
In reply to your letter of Aug.
29 I am glad to send you a brief
message regarding the Resolu-
tion, S. Res. 325, recently intro-
duced by Senators Hatch, Mur-
ray, Taft and myself, recom-
mending that the President and
Secretary of State use their good
offices to put into effect imme-
diately their solemn obligation by
the immediate establishment of
mass emergency rescue shelters
in the mandated territory of Pal-
estine, similar to the emergency
shelter at Oswego, N. Y., so that
the Hebrews of Europe may find
there haven from the ordeals of
persecution.
Let us hope that something
will be accomplished in order
that the Jewish people of all
Europe and of the whole world
will find shelter and happiness
which they have not been able
to enjoy in recent years.
With best personal regards, I
am
Sincerely,
Homer Ferguson.
Resolution follows:
Whereas the Government of
Hungary has specifically ex-
pressed its readiness to release
those Jews who could enter
Palestine, which is easily ac-

cessible from Balkan countries
by land route and calls for
little or no shipping space, and
whose six hundred thousand
Hebrews are clamoring for an
opportunity to shelter and feed
their tormented kin; and
Whereas the Governments of
the United Kingdom and the
United States have accepted
the proposal of the Hungarian
Government made on July 17,
1944, to the International
Committee of the Red Cross
for the release of Jews, and
have officially and publicly stat-
ed that they "will find tem-
porary havens of rescue where
such people may live in safe-
ty": Now, therefore, be it
Resolved, That the Senate
of the United States recom-
mends and urges the President
and the Secretary of State to
use their good offices to put
into effect immediately this
solemn obligation by the imme-
diate establishment of mass
emergency rescue shelters in
the mandated territory of Pal-
estine, similar to the emer-
gency shelter at Oswego, N.
Y., so that the Hebrews of
Europe may find there haven
from the ordeals of persecu-
tion.

APPEALS FOR RESCUE FUND
IN ALL DETROIT CONGREGATIONS

At a special meeting of Detroit
Rabbis and Synagogue presidents
held Saturday night before Cli-
chos, it was resolved to raise the
sum of $50,000 for the Vaad-
Hahatzalah Rescue Fund through
appeals in all Detroit Congrega-
tions the first day of Rosh Hash-
onah before Shofor.
The Vaad Hahatzalah, working
in close cooperation with the Gov-
ernment Refugee Committee, has
hitherto succeeded in saving the
lives of thousands of Jews, many
of whom were already on their
way to the death chambers of
Poland. Aside from its direct
rescue work, thousands of food
packages are regularly dispatched
every month to refugees in all
parts of the world, wherever they
have been stranded.
A confidential report heard at
a meeting Wednesday, Sept. 6,
at the Jewish Community Center,
revealed the possibilities for more
extensive rescue work that pre-

sent themselves at this crucial
moment of the war. Thousands
of Jewish lives can now he saved
if only sufficient funds were avail-
able.
It is hoped that Detroit Jewry
will do its full part in this gr eat
effort of saving as many of our
