These are mostly skin tests, but they proved either in- accurate or dangerous. Only two methods of determining tub- erculosis were reliable. One was the culture method, which neces- sitated laboratory examination of cultures taken from a patient suspected of tuberculosis. The other was the X-ray. Both neces- sitated extensive and expert me- chanical techniques and expen- sive equipment. In addition, they did not provide a rapid method for mass testing. What was needed, Dr. Corper decided, was a really effective skin test, one which, if need be, even a child could apply to him- self. He sought a test which could be used for every living person no matter where he lived. His objective was a material and a technique for its applica- tion which would enable visiting nurses or physicians to go into a school, or a factory, a farm, a home, a big city or a rural district and determine easily and accurately who had or did not have tuberculosis, who was or was not susceptible to the dis- ease. If a positive reaction was secured, there could then be a final check through X-rays and culture tests. The most important phase of the whole program was the abil- ity to do the testing quickly and easily. This goal has been reached through the "transder- mal antolytic tuberculin" recent- ly developed in the laboratories of the National Jewish Hospital by Dr. Corper and Dr. Maurice L. Cohn, Research Chemist. Scientists like Dr. Corper do not live in ivory towers remote from the real and often discour- aging facts of life. The new tuberculosis test provides a great safeguard to the health of all peoples. But neither Dr. Corper nor the hospital believe that their task is finished. The search for a definite preventive of tub- erculosis goes on daily at N.J.H. It is hoped ultimately to be able to immunize people against tub- erculosis in the same way that they are now protected against small pox and other cantageous diseases. It is toward this end that Dr. Corper and his staff have been working for many years and will continue to de- vote their scientific skills. Victory over the totalitarian powers is no longer a dream. Because of the tenacious fight of the United Nations those who considered themselves invincible and destined to rule the universe will soon dissolve into a disor- dered, helpless and defeated mob. The fight against tuberculosis must be equally tenacious. Only through uncompromising and un- BEST WISHES For A Happy Prosperous New Year HAA'R MFG. Those who shall inherit the YOUTH 500 MICHIGAN the hour and the voice of God, has decided to go forward with the development of the largest and most comprehensive nation- al youth program in the history of the American Jewish com- munity. As has been pointed out, the war job of the American Jewish community will not end with the unconditional surrender of our enemies. That may happen, God willing, this year or next, but whenever it occurs it will merely be the signal for a new call to re-form our lives and marshall out forces for a new assault on the most considerable problem that ever faced the Jews of the world. For us remains the task of somehow bringing order out of the chaotic lives and fortunes of millions of our fellow Jews in Central and Eastern Europe, as well as for those who have been driven to the far corners of the world. This is a job as "all out" as the war itself. It will require many, many years of work and demand the full participation of our entire Jewish population. It calls for a program requiring courage, understanding, vision, daring, boundless energy, dynam- ic enthusiasm and loyal partici- pation. 'To train and develop a reser- voir of young Jewish leaders, possessing these attributes, is a fundamental objective of the Bnai Brith Youth Organization. Born during a terrible depres- sion and nurtured on the most horrible conflict in the history of mankind, the present genera- tion of youth possesses a stamina and a determination which must fortify our present generation of leaders who are weary of the toil and struggles and disappoint- ments of the past two decades. Our present generation of youth has a primary loyalty to the things for which this war is being fought and the sacri- fices required for the post-war reconstruction seem a small enough price for the achieve- ment of a normalcy that they have never known.
