This is a field of maize—one of the thousands of acres of soil Detroit are in receipt of a gift

reclaimed by the Jewish National Fund in Palestine and placed
under cultivation to bolster up the Jewish National Home's food
supply and its agricultural as well as industrial contribution to the
war effort. Look closely at this Palestine agricultural scene. One
can almost feel the clods of earth, see the grain shooting up from
the soil, while above there is just sufficient cloud in the sky topping
the hills to render the scene peaceful and attractive as it appears
to the builders of the Land of Israel who till it.
Figures released by the Jewish National Fund on the advent
of 5705 show that the national land possessions in Palestine have
been increased since the outbreak of the war from 471,000 dunams
to 710,000 dunams, and that in the same period the number of
colonies has been increased from 247 to 285. Thirty-six of the 38
ncw settlements that have been established are located on the land
of the Jewish National Fund. Returns from agriculture have grown
from LP. 600,000 ($2,400,000) to LP. 3,000,000 ($12,000,000) show-
ing an increase of approximately 400%.

APPROACHING THE NEW YEAR

By THE VAAD HARABONIM

The Vaad Harabonim wishes
to announce to the Jewish com-
munity of Detroit that, notwith-
standing the fact that school re-
opens Sept. 18, the day of Rosh
Hashonah, the school authorities
have promised that no hardship
will be encountered by Jewish
children who must postpone their
registration till after Rosh Hash-
onah.
Today, more than ever before,
must it become the duty of Jew-
ish parents to facilitate their
children's participation in the
congregational services for the
Peace of the world and the Sal-
vation of our Jewish brethren.
The Vaad Harabonim has re-
leased the following proclama-
tion:

Hear 0 Israel!

Give your children a Torah
education!
Observe the holy Sabbath!
Keep pure your family life!
Observe Kashruth!
Save our brethren in Europe!
Contribute generously to Vaad
HaHatzala!
Support Yeshivos and institu-
tions!
Become members of syna-
gogues!
Build Eretz Yisroel!
Unite with Israel!
We call upon Detroit Jewry
to help the Vaad Harabonim in
their task of creating and
strengthening among vs a dis-
tinguished and idealistic Jewish
life. Help the "Merkaz" uphold

Jewish honor, we beseech all De-
troit Jewish organizations, nation-
al and local, in scope, as well as
all private Jewish individuals,
that they neither endorse nor
undertake any "trefe" prepara-
tions for banquets, lunches, wed-
dings, Bar Mitzvahs, parties, etc.
Let each one realize that
aside from the great transgres-
sion involved in eating "nevelos"
and "trefos," there is also in-
volved, in making overt "trefe"
parties, a gross "Chilull Hashem."
Warning!
Be on guard against eating in
places that advertise "Kosher
Style." They are absolutely
"trefe."
Be on guard against restaur-
ants and delicatessens that have
no rabbinical supervision. We
are warning them that they re-
move their absolutely misleading
signs of "Kosher" or "Kosher
Style."
Do not buy "tongues" from
groceries or delicatessens if they
do not have the Kosher stamp.
They are absolutely "trefe." We
beseech everyone to cooperate
with us in remedying this flag-
rant situation.
The Vaad Harabonim is con-
ducting a religious campaign for
the observances of the Sabbath,
Kashruth, Torah education, and
other important matters that will
soon be announced.
The "Merkaz" is creating the
facilities and actualizing the po-
tentialities for carrying out this
sacred work.
The Vaad Harabonim holds its
meetings every Monday at 11:00
a. m. in the Bnai Moshe syna-
gogue, Dexter at Lawrence. The
executive body of the "Merkaz"
holds meetings every other week.

regarding the above-mentioned
matters, kindly contact Rabbi

arships to the Scholarship Fund
of the Schools from Mr. and
Mrs. Eli Lightstone of Rochester

Mr. Lightstone, a retired mer-

1889, and has watched the De-
troit community grow. Mr.

active participant in various re-
ligious, educational, philanthropic
and civic endeavors. He was one
of the co-organizers with Dr.
Noah Aaronstam and the late
Hyman Goldman and J. Levin,
of the first Detroit Zionist group
which was then known as Bnai
Zion, and served as its secretary
and treasurer for many years.
Mr. Lightstone now belongs to
the Mizrachi Organization of De-
troit. He is also affiliated with
Congregation Beth Tefila Em-
manuel as an active board mem-
ber, and has served as its presi-
dent in the past.
Mrs. Goldie Lightstone has

neering womanhood which has
made so valiant a contribution
to the war effort and to Line up-
building of the Jewish National
Home. She symbolizes the type
of pioneering woman portrayed
in Julian L. Meltzer's descriptive
article.
