THE JEW TAKES REVENGE

By RABBI JACOB J. NATHAN
of Bnai Moshe Synagogue

The New Year 5705 dawns marking a crucial turn-
in g-point in mankind's titanic struggle against the dark
forces of human degradation. The military might of the
ruthless barbarian is being undermined. Day and night
the allied powers bomb and blast with unprecedented
fury his fighting men, so that victory inevitably must
follow. The enemy is challenged not by mortal might
alone; he has defied the moral law. As a result his
defeat and complete annihilation will inexhorably follow.
Soon the flag of liberation strained with the blood of
martyrs will be unfurled over Europe. The free spirit
of man after 10 years of persecution and humiliation
shall arise once more unfettered from its chains.

We will bind our wounds; raise the fallen, heal the
maimed and wounded, and bury our dead. We will re-
build the destruction wrought by the enemy. The task
will command the whole-hearted cooperation of all.

On Tuesday he will preach on
"Prerequisites of a Jewish Re-
vival."
Rabbi Louis J. Haas of New

York, will officiate at services in
the Social Hall during Rosh
Hashonah.
There will be special children's
services at Shaarey Zedek on both

dren from six years of age to
nine, inclusive, services will be
held from 10 a. m. to noon in
the Old Prayer Room. For chil-
dren 10 to 14 years of age, the
services will be held in the Frank
Prayer Room, also from 10 to
noon.

The scars of man's inhumanity to man run deep,
and will take generations to heal, but the festering
wounds of Israel are far more grievious. Our people
have been the special target of the blood beast. With
Germanic gruntlichkeit he has unleashed against us the
horrors of hell. Our brethren he has consumed in his
fiery furnaces, millions have perished through planned
starvation. The foe has sworn to eradicate the memory
of the Jews. Countless numbers have died "Al kiddush
hashem" to satisfy his insatiable lust to kill. However,
our name he has not obliterated. We are very much
alive. The day of doom is fast approaching when the
fiend will reap the harvest of hatred and revenge engen-
Harry Fogel Promoted
dered in the hearts of his suffering victims.

What form will our revenge take? Will it consist
in ravaging the enemy, pillaging and plundering his
cities, raping and murdering his people? No! Therein
lies not Israel's revenge. The revenge of our people will
manifest itself by an overwhelming outburst of new vital-
ity, by a passionate espousal of creative living. The foe
has violated the fundamental rules of humanity by tramp-
ling over our bodies, but our spirit still remains unsullied.
The will to live still pulsates dynamically within our
breast. No matter what fiendish machination the enemy
resorted to to bring about our capitulation, our will to
survive has not been taken from us. Every brutal blow
against us has reinforced our determination to stubbornly
persist as a national entity. Every merciless and sadistic
assault directed at us has forged a steel-like resolve to
fight on to tilt bitter end until victory is ours. Verily,
"Am Yisrael Chay—The People of Israel Lives" and
shall continue to live long after the curse of Nazism is
forgotten.

Our revenge will be complete only after we have
gathered the scattered remnants of the House of Jacob
and securely established and rehabilitated them upon the
soil of Eretz Yisrael; only when we have attained that
degree of unity and harmony in Klal Yisrael, which will
banish dissension and suspician within our ranks—our
revenge will be overwhelming when we shall recognize
the supreme authority of the Torah, only when its mitz-
vahs will become more firmly rooted in the heart of
Israel.

Let us heed the call of revenge by commencing to
live again heroically and intrepidly, in face of danger,
realizing that our tribulations have cleansed us of the
dross of our souls, by aspiring fervently once more to-
wards the goal of human brotherhood; and by praying
more zealously for that day when evil shall be banished
and all men shall worship the Almighty.

Harry Fogel, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Max Fogel of 2551 W. Euc-
lid Ave., Detroit, was promoted

Camp Haan, Cal., where he was
assigned to the 40th Infantry
Division.
The unit was subsequently
transferred to Fort Lewis, Wash.,
and when Camp Kohler, Cal.,
opened in June of that year, he
was sent there as one of the
cadremen to activate the post.
Capt. Fogel was a Staff Set-
geant when accepted for the
Transportation Corps Officers
Candidate School, Mississippi
State College, and was commis-
sioned a Second Lieutenant in
March, 1943.
He was assigned to the New
York Port of Embarkation and
transferred to Camp Kilmer, N.
J., one of its installations.

BACK THE ATTACK BY BUYINu MORE BONDS

"The past year has been one of mixed
tragedy and hope for the oppressed peo-
ples of the world. The triumphant march
of our armies has rightly filled us with
pride in their achievement and with grim
satisfaction in the justice they have meted
out to the enemy.

"In this dawn of the New Year 5705,
we have every reason to believe that vic-
tory will come soon. We cannot forget,
however, what fearful tortures have been
endured by the pitiful victims of Nazi ag-
gression. We would be inhuman if we
ever forgot them, and we would be blind if
we thought that simply by avenging the
sacrifice of the innocent we had paid our
debt to the martyred dead.

"We can only pay that debt by insur-
ing that never again will we allow our-
selves to be lulled into a false security
while the forces of intolerance and brutal-
ity are left free to sweep the world. It is
not enough that we stamp out the evil Nazi
beliefs,—the offshoots of ignorance and
unthinking prejudice,—never again rise to
plague the world."
