A NEW YEAR MESSAGE OF HOPE

Temple Israel Choir
To Broadcast Yom
Kippur Music on WWJ

By ABRAHAM SRERE

Chairman of the Board
Jewish Welfare Federation

Our prayers for an end to the darkness and despair
brought on by Hitler and his gangsters are on the verge
of being answered. Our casualties have been heavy, our
numbers have been woefully diminished. In many lands
the few Jews that survived will have to start afresh to
reestablish themselves. The doors of Palestine will no
doubt be opened to thousands of Jews who are refugees
in foreign lands with no opportunity of establishing them-
selves elsewhere. In our own land we have much for
which to be thankful, but even here the seeds of anti-
semitism have been planted to a degree that is fraught
with great danger.

Upon the invitation of WWJ-
the Detroit News—Rabbi Leon
Frani and the Choir of Temple
Israel will broadcast a program

In our own community we are faced with the task
of maintaining those services which provide care for the
aged, for the children, health and medical needs, recrea-
tional facilities and leisure time activities and the many
other services that go to make up a well-rounded com-
munity program. All of these will require the effort and
support of every Jew if we are to shoulder the responsi-
bility that is ours for a fuller and better life for Jewry
everywhere.

This is a time for thanks in terms of performance,
in terms of devotion to the causes that we hold dear.
Through our Jewish agencies for the health, education
and general welfare of the community at home and
abroad we can express our gratitude for the progress
that has been made. Through the War Chest we can, by
working and contributing, record our sense of apprecia-
tion for the lives already saved and help make certain
that rescue and rehabilitation will continue in the year.
It has been a serious year for all of us. May the
year to come bring us and our fellow-men near and far
peace and a good life.

ROSH HASHONAH GREETINGS

By CHAPLAIN MORRIS ADLER

I pray that the New Year may bring its redeeming
and compensating blessings for the sorrows and horrors
of the tragic period, which we hope is now drawing to a
close. The two chief motifs of this season are repentance
and resolve; repentance as we face the past, resolve as
we front the future. These are likewise the attitudes
the world most acutely needs. Without penitence, for we
too share in the guilt, we shall lack the humility out of
which alone wisdom rises. Without resolution we shall
be bereft of the steel-like determination adequate for
the immense problems of healing and re-building that
challenge us. These are, too, the traits which American
Israel must develop in this hour. We must recognize our
weakness and failures in the past and must mobilize our
group will to correct them.

To the Jewish community, its leaders and members,
I extend my warn and earnest wishes, that the year 5705
may ushed in a period of health and blessing—and that
satisfaction which is born of consecrated endeavor in
behalf of great things.

DAN FROHMAN

on "The Meaning and the Music
of Yom Kippur" next Thursday
night, Sept. 21, at 8:30 to 9
o'clock.
Rabbi Fram will introduce and
interpret the classic prayers to
be sung by Cantor Tulman and
the choir. Among the composi-
tions to be rendered will be the
Neilah Kaddish (Mourners' Pray-
er), the Priestly Blessing, the
Kedusha ("Holy, Holy"), and
the Kol Nidre. Several of the
compositions to be rendered are
the original works of Dan Froh-
man, the director of Temple Is-
rael, will be at the console of
the studio organ.
Rabbi Leon Fram announces
the following sermon topics for
the Day of Atonement: "Recon-
ciliation" for the Kol Nidre serv-
ice; "Yom Kippur Story" at the
Children's service; and "Immor-
tality" at the Memorial service.
All the services will take place
in the auditorium of the Detroit
Institute of Arts.
The Religious School of Tem-
ple Israel, whose opening was de-
layed for the same reason that
the opening of public school was
postponed, will begin its sessions
at Hampton Public School, 18460
Warrington Dr., Saturday morn-
ing, Sept. 23, and Sunday morn-
ing Sept. 24.
