escape had failed. The husband
asked help in securing an affi-
davit for the family, "all state-
less and all Jews." Today in
Fort Ontario, they b,Tin the
New Year in clean and private
quarters, and the father is get-
ting acquainted with his six-year-
old daughter.
Since the years following the
First World War, the N.C.J.W.
has been instrumental in bring-
ing hundreds of thousands of
war scattered families together—
not so dramatically as at Fort
Ontario, but restoring hope and
human contact to the interned.
All information received at the
Council's 215 sections in all parts
of the country is cleared through

the national office, and this sys-
tem has resulted in some extra-
ordinary coincidences. In one in-
stance, two letters arrived at the
national office almost simultan-
eously; one from a refugee in
Canada asking help in finding his
father, his only relative believed
to be left alive; the other from
a man who had escaped to Aus-
tralia and who wanted informa-
tion about his uncle. Father and
uncle were one and the same
man and, fortunately, his name
was in the Council's location of
relatives file.
One of the happy stories is
that of David, born in Denmark
and taken by his father to
Palestine as a child. The parents
had been divorced, and the moth-
er remained in Norway. David
was a shepherd until 1939 when
he became a sailor and came to

thousands may rejoice in reunion.
Among the surviving refugees are
countless children, a tragic num-
ber of them orphaned by Nazi
cruelty. These little ones must
not be left, as it happened after
the last war, to become half-
wild, half-starving bands, with-
out shelter or loving care. No
time should be lost in this im-
mense job of human salvage.
