the gist of your idea?"
Rothstein: ".We want to make
our fellow-Jews feel that God
enters into our every-day exist-
ence, that we serve Him by con-
tributing to the improvement of
His creation."
\Verner: "I suppose that this
includes the fight against anti
Semitism which we all consider
contrary to the precepts of relig-
ion."
Rothstein: "I think that the
anti-Semitism
of
phenomenon
should be of greater concern to
the Christian than to the Jew.
From one standpoint, however,
the United Synagogue is deeply
concerned with it, namely, as it
affects the personality of the
Jews, that is, with the danger of
inferiority complexes and mal-
a djustment."
"What does th.?,
Werner:
United Synagogue do in this re-
spect?"
Rothstein: Through the devel-
opment of effective educational
procedures it endeavors to give
the Jew a realistic sense of his
own worthwhileness, to provide
him with self-respect based upon
a knowledge of past achievements
as well as a desire to make furth-
er contributions to the improve-

ment of world conditions. Do
you see what I mean? Self-re-
spect is a condition sine qua non
for inducing respect on the part
of others. If you don't respect
yourself, you can't demand the
respect of others. By fostering
this self-respect in the individual
Jew, the United Synagogue makes
a contribution towards the miti-
gation of anti-Semitism."
\Verner: "Does the United
Synagogue seek the help of
Christians in its efforts to im-
prove this world?"
Rothstein: "Decidedly. T h e
ultimate ideals of Christianity
and Judaism, our doctrines of the
fatherhood of God and the
brotherhood of man are identi-
cal. We accordingly believe in
full cooperation, The more we
cooperate with our fellow-citi-
zens of the Christian faith, the
greater the mutual respect, un-
derstanding and friendship."
Werner: "You told me of the
activities of the 'United Syna-
gogue Mobilization for Victory.'
I am sure you have already made
plans for the postwar period,
especially for those of your
members now serving in the
armed forces who will face many
difficulties on their return to
their home country, financial and
otherwise. Am I right?"
Rothstein: "Indeed, at our lat-
est convention, in Atlantic City,
it was decided that a commis-
sion be established to work out
means by which the 500,000 Jew-
ish boys and girls who will re-
turn from the battle fronts of
the world can be re-integrated in
the religious life of their com-
munities. Of course, help to

tives at their heads. This will
require it much larger budget
than the one under which the
United Synagogue has been op-
erating. As a beginning, the
United Synagogue proposes to
raise $100,000 for 1944 with the
expectation that, as the work
develops, the program will re-
quire several times that amount
annually."
Werner: "Does the United
Synagogue consider work for the
salvation of the remnants of
European Jewry as part of its
program?"
Rothstein: Definitely. What,
in the interests of simplicity, we
call the 3 R's Program of the
United Synagogue, includes Res-
cue, Rehabilitation, and Resettle-
ment of European Jewry. We do
our utmost to help save as many
Jewish lives as possible from the
claws of the Gestapo. We de-
mand the rehabilitation of all
victims of Hitlerism after the
war, as well as the restoration
of their property. Finally, we
urge the United Nations to per-
mit the homeless Jews either to
go back to the countries of their
origin and there start life anew,
or to emigrate to Palestine.

necessarily, an essential part of
the program."
Werner: "Judging from the
fact that your organization es-
tablished a synagogue center in
Jerusalem, and that three prom-
inent members of your group,
Judge Louis E. Levinthal, Dr.
Solomon Goldman and Dr. Israel
Goldstein have been outstanding
in American Zionism, I think I
am correct in assuming that the
United Synagogue is favoring the
establishment of a National Jew-
ish Home in Palestine. Is that
true, Mr. Rothstein?"
Rothstein:
Certainly.
T h e
founder of our organization, Pro-
fessor Schechter, soon after his
arrival in the United States pub-
lished an essay fully espousing
Zionism. You will find that the
United Synagogue congregations
provide the greatest strength to
the Zionist cause, both in money
and leadership."
Werner: "At your latest con-
vention you must have made nu-
merous plans for the improve-
ment of certain aspects of your
organization. What would you
consider the most important
ones?"
Rothstein: "We plan to have
