(An interview with Samuel Rothstein, newly-elected President of The United Synagogue of America) By ALFRED WERNER EDITOR'S NOTE :—Alfred Werner was born in Vienna, Austria, and is a graduate of the University of Vienna. He was editor of "Gerechtigkeit" and "Die Stimme," and director of the literary department of the Vienna Jewish Cultural Association (Wiener Jeudische Kulturstelle). After the Nazis invaded Aus- tria, he was kept in the Dachau concentration camp for six months. In 1940 he came to the United States, and has since been writing for the general as well as Jewish press here. Dr. Werner was on the editorial stair of the Universal Jewish Encyclopedia. In the year 1913 Europe's the day of Armaggedon. On Feb. great powers were busily forging 22 of the same year, a group of their weapons of destruction for important people met in this means of the coming showdown country to discuss the ways and battle. But when Professor Sol- omon Schechter, president of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America rallied his forces in the old Seminary building on West 123rd St., New York, he (lid not think in terms of rifles and guns; he convoked the representatives of congregations and institutions of higher Jewish learning solely for the purpose of combating de- terioration and dissolution of Judaism in this country! It was not difficult for him to convince these people of the necessity for adapting the forms of our religious life to the re- quirements of 20th century American environment, without discarding any of the essential features of our ancestral faith. The great old scholar insisted on the traditional observance of the Sabbath, the dietary laws and the Hebrew language, but he rea- lized at the same time that he had to meet certain American conditions in order to provide an up-to-date broad-minded general concept of Judaism for the new, American-bred generation o f Jews who, otherwise, would no longer feel at home in the syna- gogue.
